Wow...  my wife has been adamant about not beating on the screens/shades since we bought the boat.   This is the first one we had trouble with.       Sounds like everyone has had some major issues..

My plan is to take the shade off the boat,  bring it home and lay it on a work table to see if I can fix it or a replacement is required.   As I am in the middle of Nantucket Sound right now, its going to be a day or two before I am back in RI.

It is possible, with great patience, to take these apart and repair them. Mine have suffered from rusted and broken springs (a relatively easy fix) to broken strings (replaced with whipping twine, and a more challenging fix). The curved screens are more difficult. Any repair of these screens will tap your patience and challenge logical thinking, as the route of the center "string" around the perimeter is, well, unusual and unexplainable. Look closely at the parts that are still intact for guidance.

Thats very interesting to hear that they are repairable. Were you able to replace the silver foil fabric or possibly it was still in good condition?

I did not attempt to replace the screen or foil, but I think if you had the parts it could be easily done. The tricky part is re-routing the string through a thicket of weird fittings.

A few years ago Dometic had the replacement curved screens for the forward berth on my 505 priced above $1,000, each. Crazy. I've been very gentle with them since. And any salt will eat the springs quickly. I keep a few spares on hand, sourced from Dometic.
