Is the regulator/alternator that is standard on the 415 capable of doing a 3 stage charge?

The system needs to be upgraded in order to provide a 3 stage charge either by changing the regulator or by adding a separate alternator to battery charger such as http://www.sterling-power.com/products-altbatt.htm

As I have seen, there is the standard Volvo alternater/regulator connected parallel to the starter-battery and ( over a Sterling digital relais ) to the main battery.

That's correct. The alternator is 115A so should provide a hefty charge when required.

However, there is no doubt that a 3 stage alternator controller (or alternator to battery charger) would improve overall charging, especially if you are away from shore power for several days.

As it happens, I just completed fitting one of the Sterling Advanced Digital Regulators (the AR12VD).  On Grey Goose's Yanmar 3JH4 engine at least I can confirm there is only a basic regulator inside the standard Hitachi alternator.  The new fancy regulator is now in place but it was a lengthy job to fit it.  Ilkhanse if you go on to upgrade my advice would be to go for one of the Sterling "Alternator to Battery Charger" solutions or similar.  More expensive, but seems to be a lot easier to fit.
