Topic: Changing Engine OilPosted: 04 February 2010 at 23:24 |

This is my first time servicing our Volvo MD2030 on our Hanse 371. I tried to pump out the oil through the Dip Stick but after a number of attemps very little oil came out. The engine had been left running for a while to heat up the oil. I moved up and down the pump hose in the dip stick in the hope of making contact with the oil but with no luck. When I replaced the Dip Stick and measured the oil, the dip stick showed full. I had used this (Pump in the dipstick) technique on other engines and no problems.
Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? The other option is to remove the sump nut but that looks like a messy job as there is no room to fit a tray to catch the old oil.

Did you unscrew the oil filler cap when you tried to pump out the oil through the dispstick?
The oil will stay in the engine if it's closed...

Hi.
Aft and below the top of the dip stick neck and almost hidden by the oil filter is a black rubber ball. Lift this ball off and the exposed tube goes to the underside of the sump. This pipe is used for a simple hand pump. The long suction pipe of a vacumm reservior pump normally goes down the dipstick but will not fit down the under sump pipe. You can just see the black ball to the right edge of the oil filter directly below the coolant drain tap I've just fitted. Let us know how you get on!

Hi. I found and removed the black bung and guess what. My pump hose is too thick. The tube opening is quite small. It will be 2 weeks before I get another chance to remove the oil. In some of the reply that I recieved, I noticed talk about removing the coolant. What is this about. I thought that I flushed the engine by placing a water hose onto the empeller and running the engine for a while. Does the MD2030 have this coolant and do I need to remove the nut where you have a tap. Am I suppsoed to run engine again with nut off or do I just let it flow out? Where did you buy the tap and did you have to use a special sealant when fitting the tap?
i think I need a user manual to get a better understanding of the engine
Thanks

Gregor. Likewise when I get down to the boat I will try removing cap before pumping out through dip stick, but will I get all the oil out this way or do I still have to go back to removing the black bung from th ehose that leads down to the sump

If you have the engine running for a while, than you'll be able to pump out most of the oil. The last drip can get out via the bold at the underside of the engine. I usually don't do this last part. The warm oil can be sucked out easily. I also add Wynn's Diesel Plus oil, this helps to maintain the engine.

Forgive me for being blunt. Your location is not given but if you live in the UK may I suggest you do the RYA Diesel Maintenance course before you do any more work on your engine. Trying to be helpful. Mike |
