Hi, we recently got caught out in some nasty weather on the way from Phuket to Langkawi. Sustained 30 knots gusting 35-40. Not pleasant. but we saw it coming and all was ok. In fact I was very happy with how well the boat handled this.
When we finally got back to our home marina, I noticed the starboard wheel was a bit loose. I initially thought that the main central nut had come loose but it is actually that the spokes are loose in the main central hub. I cannot see any signs of welds holding these in and am wondering, before I try and fix it, how they were originally fixed. Has anyone had this happen and or know what the fix is? Thanking you in advance All the best Paul

Hi Paul
Since the referenced post (2016) I have also had the second wheel welded by the same guy - more as insurance rather than it actually needing it.
In the 5 years since, both wheels have felt completely rigid with no concern about further problems - and that has included some rough passages when the wheel is used for bracing as much as steering! The difficult bit is to find a really competent stainless steel welder. I assume there will be someone locally who's up to the job - the problem could be identifying them. Personal recommendation from a satisfied customer is obviously the best endorsement, which is how I found my guy in the Solent. I believe he has now retired. Good luck! |

Hi, an update to my original query. I contacted Jefa who were very helpful. They said you have to remove the two Delrin washers and get it re-welded. They sent me two replacement washers as they said you cannot remove the original friction fit ones without destroying them, a statement I proved to be correct!
I took it to a recommended stainless specialist who cleaned out the old welds and re-welded it for the princely sum of US$ 10! All the best Paul

I’m the new owner of a 2014 445 with the same issue on one of the wheels , popped the wheel off and local welder retacked the spokes , I contacted Jefa via the general contact email on the website for replacement delrin washers, they responded within 24hrs and are sending some new replacements free of charge to NZ…..now that is customer service!
