SAILORS SPLASH LOTTO CASH ON NEW BOAT

11:00 - 14 March 2008

Disabled sailors in Torbay have decided how to spend their £80,000 Lotto windfall.

The Torbay Disabled Sailing Association landed the cash last autumn in the Peoples Millions popular vote. After testing out a number of sailing boats, the group has finally made a decision and hopes to have the boat in service in September.

Association chairman Dave Musgrove said: "The Big Lottery Fund Peoples Millions win has provided the association with the fun and excitement of looking for and selecting a boat which will meet the needs of as many diverse disabilities as possible.

"The committee was set the task of selecting a boat and the final decision has been a Hanse 350.

"This is a 35ft boat with enough room on the main cockpit and in the cabin for a wheelchair user, with enough space to manoeuvre around it by both crew and other disabled people.

"It is a great fun boat, fast enough to be exciting and yet very stable.

"It has been tested at sea by a group of our disabled people and we have placed an order and paid a deposit."

He said the hull will be built and delivered to the fitting-out centre at Hanse UK by mid to late April with final fittings and special equipment such as extra handrails and a hoist for wheelchairs by mid May.

"We hope to sail her from Hamble Point Marina down the coast to Torquay in late May or early June where she will be berthed on the New Town Dock and a programme of crew training and sea trials will take place awaiting her final dedication and naming in September," Mr Musgrove added.

"These are exciting days and a big thanks must go to Peoples Millions and those members of our community who voted for us."
