Iron keel rust

   Recently hauling out I discovered that my iron keel has begun to rust (mainly on the front edge). As you can tell from the pictures the rust is appearing through the antifouling in some places while the fairing compound has fallen off in others. The boat is a 370e from 2008 so i don't believe there is anything alarming going on.

The shipyard has provided a quote for a full keel grit-blast/sanding/epoxy treatment. I'm considering just repairing the problematic patches instead. My only worry is the risk that the rust spreads across the keel if i don't undetake the full treatment now.

How do you generally treat rust? Patch it up or full treatment?

	Right now the problem is very localized and it may be years before it is widespread. I’ve been in similar situations and have always chosen to treat the spots where it appears. Wire brush and sand down to bright metal followed quickly with solvent wipe and west epoxy. This may postpone a full treatment for a long long time !

	With respect to Leon, while you might get away with it in the short term you'll end up having to do everything twice later so I'd consider the opposite. There may be other affected areas as yet unseen and if you do the whole keel now you'll prevent this from emerging and spreading. You'll also be able to better identify other issues affecting the keel and even if you don't find any, that's valuable knowledge in itself. Doing the whole keel will also provide a clean, smooth surface to which the antifouling can better adhere. In effect, its good preventive maintenance to periodically strip the whole thing and having it epoxied is 'best practice'. 	Since this is not a structural issue then either way is fine. If and when a full treatment done, the job wouldn't be anymore difficult for the yard.

	Thanks all for some very valuable feedback. After talking to the shipyard we have landed on a temporary solution for now. Will re-evaluate at next haul out.

	hi there could i ask what happened the keel after the couple of years, did you do a full sand blast or local repair same happening to mine from anchor rub its in preveza/greece and the quote to repair sandblast was ca 3800€
	hanse 400 2007 no 244
