After leaving Aruba in the Netherland Antilles, Sunboy and her crew head for Cartagena, Columbia, South America. This magnificent city is well worth the visit and rated as one of THE best places we visited in our whole trip. We were warned that this particular passage is commonly referred to as the 'Northern Cape Horn' with horrendous conditions. We waited for the right weather window and whilse we expended a fair bit of diesel, the serene conditions were incredibly relaxing and enjoyable. We have posted a video slide show of our visit to Cartagena on You Tube with the link being;

Thanks again Al for your time in putting the video together.
Who did you find the most useful as a cruising guide to the Caribbean? Will contact you soon, in Spain and all the internets are in bars with LOUD football and music all day, so Skype is unlistenable. But the tapas are good and the weather ideal apart from the occasional 25knts in the marina. |

Hi mate, as we landed in St Lucia and went south from there, we didnt see a whole lot of the Carribean. As far as cruising guides were concerned, we got most of our info from other cruisers and arc participants. Because most people head the same way, there is a lot of networking going on. Lot of good guide books available in Las Palmas. The islands and passages are pretty straight forward, the main thing to look out for was some of the anchorages in the island of St Vincent as there are certainly some real no go areas with people being attacked on the boats. Our experience with the Carribean was that it was very comercialised and very crowded and very expensive. The other area of concern developing when we were there was the passage from Grenada across to Los Roques and Los Aves. They were still considered safe from attack from pirates operating out of Venezuela but there had been attacks reported between Grenada and the islands south being Trinidad and Tobago. We sailed a fair way north from Grenada in company with another boat and took the precaution of blackout / radio silence but that was a bit extreme but with a young family on board just wanted to make sure. Los Roques and Los Aves were great. Obviously the latest information would be available when you arrive there. Look forward to your call when the sounds lessen
