Hello all. First post. I have a Hanse 301 based on the south coast of Ireland which we bought in September. I'm thinking of fitting a chartplotter so it's visable from tiller. Has anyone done likewise on their 301? I was wondering if there were any hassles/issues linking up to the Simrad Combi unit? Also I went down to my boat the other day for a sail (light winds cloudless sky, beautiful) but having bought cutlery, cups, plates, bowls etc, I now realise space is fairly limited. Was thinking of putting everything in a box to store in the drawer under the the grill/oven. Any ideas.

regards in advance

First of all congratualtions on getting a 301, great boat, good choice, and welcome to myHanse.

I am not sure where on the south coast you are based but i am looking at getting over to Kilmore Quay en of May first week of June with members of the Merioneth Yacht Club, Barmouth, Wales.
Getting back to your question,I have no knowledge of the Simrad Combi unit you mention, as I have a Raymarine A65 fitted on the chart table, running Navionics charts, and for me to check the route, etc i use a hand held chart plotter, running also navionics charts, when i am in the cockpit, and i have found my iPhone great in all respects and it is plugged in to 12v just by the hatch, it is protected in a water proof wallet, but I also have a secondary hand held chart plotter/ phone, in the form of an areo but runs C-map, which I also find excelent.  It is prob cheaper to coose an option like this, especially if you get an ordinary hand held chart plotter.

Regarding cutlery, cups, etc in a 301 - now sadly this for me is one of the 2 main problems with a 301, - lack of storage and cramped heads.

Regarding the first, you have to be inventive, for example, for fresh produce store in nets and hang inside the stern locker.
Our family, 2 x teenage children myself and my wife have stayed on board for on occasions upto 10 days, and we did not fall out..

If you want further info, drop me a line with your phone number.

Hi Keiran,Good sailing with your 301-we love ours but as you say storage is not great. We keep our cups on hooks screwed into the strip of wood covering the top of the galley half bulkhead above the fridge. They have never fallen off.Plates are stored vertically on shelf at the back of the galley.Cutlery in a plastic tub (about 6 ins tall ) fastened in the right hand corner of the galley against the small bulkhead between the galley and aft cabin. All works well for us.We use the cupboard under the oven for pans. For the chartplotter we have a Garmin 172C mounted on the top of the instrument bank above the compass which works great as in full view from the cockpit. This is the model with an internal antenna .Our sprayhood covers this area so no problems with water.

Thanks guys. While we are enjoying the boat and really love it, we - like yourselves - will have to be a little 'creative' when it comes to storage. While small plates are ok I am really wondering what to do with larger 'dinner' plates - although when I peep down at my ever enlarging belly I suppose I could dispense with the large plates!
The Simrad Combi came with the boat - I thought they were standard on all 301s circa 2000-2003. As I don't want to upgrade all the electronic gadgets such as speed depth wind etc I was hoping to connect the new chartplotter (probably Garmin 551) to the speed/log and was wondering if there were 'issues' to be dealt with.

Hi,
I have mounted a Standard Horizon 176 with and external ariel above the depth and log. Works really well. On the storage front you will get used to being tidy, but more importantly the boat sails really well.

Hi Keirin.  Was just looking through old posts and saw yours about the chart plotter.  I have just fitted a Standard Horizon CPI300 and have mounted it on top of the instrument housing, protected by the sprayhood.  A light buffing on the housing surface to flatten it (to take the base mount) was all that was required.  OK - you need to lean forward a bit to reach the plotter buttons, but it's not such a hassle and anyway, how often do you need to visit the controls?  It is clearly visible from all parts of the cockpit.  I have not got it to interconnect with the Simrad combi unit, but I am not sure what would be gained by doing so?  I have interfaced it with the Simrad DSC VHF and I think that's all I need.  A second mount and connections would allow me to move the instrument between there and the chart table, should I want to.  The CPI300 comes with a two leads, I presume for that purpose, but strangley not a second base mount.  If you want to discuss or get photos send me your e mail address

Regards
