    Posted: 30 April 2006 at 11:19

I am looking at installing a Lewmar 900 horizontal electric windlass in the bow anchor chain locker and to do so will need to create the shelf to mount and support the unit.

Does anyone have any pics of their locker shelf that supports the windlass and do you have any recommendations on the installation and design to improve the current arrangement?

Essentially are there any inherent problems with the current system?

Many thanks

Hi Icarus.
Last autunm I installed a Quick Genius electric winch. Pig of a job. It took 10 man days and when drawing the 50mm square cross sectional area cables through you need two people.

I will take some photos and draw up a guide if you want, but that will take a few days (I await your reply). Also I could send you a cutout/template of the shelf I used (that will save you 1/2 a day).

We have used the winch twice this year. In a F6/7 when the anchor dragged and this Sat/Sun in perfect conditions. It was worth all the hard work.

Regards
Mike

Mike

Thanks for replying, luckily i had the cables installed when i ordered the boat, they have been run from the front locker to the aft cabin where the batteries are.

If its not to much hassle could you send the template for the shelf. How did you install it? glassed? or other?

How much chain do you have? i am looking at between 50-75 m almost all chain with little rope.

Thanks

Watch out with all chain. I have a 371 with a factory installed Lofrans windlass, and an all chain rode. The locker is not really deep enough for the chain (I have 50 meters which is enough but only just). As a result when raising the anchor I have to lie on the deck, and periodically stop the windlass, and reach down and push the pile of chain over. Otherwise it will stack up and jam the windlass.

This might be slightly better with a vertical axis windlass,  as the exit point for the chain will be a bit higher. I would mount the windlass as high as you can get it, to make sure of a decent drop. And I also think a 50-50 chain-rope rode might be a good idea.

The top of the shelf is 195mm below the bottom edge of the anchor well coaming. The height is a compromise. Too low and the chain piles up too quickly, I have to push it downwards every 15m of chain. Too high and the shelf is too large to manoeuvre into place above the batons which I stixafix'ed on the hull to support the shelf. Align the winch with the anchor hanging off the bow roller to ensure the chain sits correctly on the gyspy.

This U shape is used as a clamp whilst the sixafix on the baton is drying. Use a spreader plate on the outside and a couple wedges on the inside. The botons and shelfs were then fibreglassed in (not very well by mee I'm sorry to add). Remember to grind/abrad off the grey flowcoat so fibreglass resin can bond properly.

Icarus.
Personal Mail me with your address and I'll send you a template for my shelf.
I have a 10Kg Delta and 48m of 8mm chain, no rope. I do use an anchor chain hook and rope to take the strain and quieten the stemhead fitting.

Mike
