Has anyone opened the inspection port for the fuel tank or removed the float sensor for cleaning?   We unfortunately overfilled the tank when we found out the monitoring was reading port for starboard and vice versa.    What was working before that event isn't now.  My guess is the port tank float got jammed and needs to be freed.   Or a new sensor installed.

In case anyone has done this work on their boat before,  any tips or gotchas?

Hi Rick, taking out the float sensor is easy. Just make sure you carefully line up the screws before you fasten it again. The original float sensors supplied by Hanse are really bad and I recommend getting good quality reed switches. I got mine from Wema in the UK. Not only are their products superior but Stuart sets an example with his customer care.

Rick,

The float can get stuck at the top of the shaft. I helped sort the same problem on  588 and was told the fix by Hanse was to put a cable tie around the top of the shaft above the float so the float was stopped from going all the way to the top. Changing the tanks around on the WE panel is just a matter of changing the input plugs over in the back of the WE panel.

I've replaced the holding tank sensors and the fresh water sensor with Maretron ultrasonic units.    I know how to replace it, as well as redirect all the sensors to my new monitoring system.   

I was specifically asking about whether an overfilled tank could jam the float.  Wayne's answer seems to indicate that its both possible, and there is a fix.   I'll give that a shot.

So I ended up checking the sensor and correcting the problem.   

I removed the sole to expose the entire tank.   Having dogs,  it was about time to clean the inevitable fur from the board edges anyway.    The problem turned out to NOT be a float issue, but a wire connection at the tank.   I now read the same OHMS from sensor thru the various connections prior to the display.  So far so good.

When I looked at the tank, everything seemed fine with the mounting and cleanliness (after 4 seasons),   but two things got me curious:

1.    the sensor access / SAE mount was under a gang of hoses and not easily accessible.    I was prepared to move the metal cross-piece (a few bolts hold it in place) and chalk it up to another "of course they did it that way" when I saw the holes in the sensor plate on top had no screws in them.    It was secured by an adhesive.    Has anyone else seen this?   Is this normal?  Its not leaking in any way, and I've seen other places where HANSE has glued vs screwed.

2.    There is a tube that runs thru the tank from top to bottom but NEVER exposes the hole to fuel. It looks like something put in the tank for another boat's needs and its latent on the 575,

FWIW - if you ever had to replace the tank it certainly looks like a straightforward job...

Any thoughts?


This is a picture of the "hole to nowhere".   Just a tube running thru the tank.   Maybe for some other boats mounting where there is a post securing the tank?
