Am exploring options for Furling gennaker for my 2013 - 445
Anyone have experience? Prefer system easy to use with minimal crew

I use my north sails furling genneker on my 418 when singlehanding. Haven’t got myself into too much trouble yet ;) it’s remarkably easy to furl and my line doesn’t even come all the way back to the cockpit

I have an Elvstrom Furlstrom supplied by Inspiration Marine on my 458. Probably about 90m2, about the same size as the cruising chute (with snuffer) I had on the 385.
But this sail gets used much more frequently as it can be furled so easily for gybing or just when no longer required. It does need to be furled carefully (tightly) if you want to leave it up when sailing with the jib, but in moderate wind this isn't an issue. I'd definitely recommend something on a furler for limited crew. I haven't ried it single handed yet but don't think it would be too much of an issue an issue, and much easier than using a snuffer on the foredeck. Mostly I sail with inexperienced crew. My furling line does come to the cockpit and I recommend this if possible.

Matt,
Is that one of the North Helix gennaker’s? They look like a good solution. If yes, then what sailing angles are you achieving with the sail? I would love to hear some first hand experience. Apologies to the OP, but a down wind sail is also planned for my 418. Key requirements for me are ease of handling with a crew of two and the ability to run deep down wind. If the sail could also come with the holy grail I would be very happy! Gordon

Hi, we have a Furlstrom on Night Train, very useful sail especially when short handed, but as with any gennaker or asymmetrical spinnaker, running deep down wind doesn't work. We find 150 degrees is optimum, although in really light conditions goose-winging works better than gybing downwind.
All the best Paul

Hi Gordon, sadly no, mine isn’t a Helix. I think North introduced that as, or just after, I ordered mine. If I had my time again I’d go for that as I’ve heard great things about them and it should be lighter without the torsion rope. Mine is 87sq m
In contrast to S&J my leach can start to unfurl and flog when coming onto the wind if I haven’t furled it tightly enough. This is mainly when singlehanded as I need to simultaneously furl and maintain tension on the sheet which isn’t always possible. Could be the way North cut the shoulders on mine. As Stuart says, easier if you have the furling line led all the way back to the cockpit ;)

We have been using a Karver 2.5 since the very beginning of our circumnavigation in 2008. A very serious racing gear, but a small diameter! In fact I did not notice the size issue when I started using it, but 13 years later I feel it a bit hard! Maybe one of the two of us is getting older

We went with the Profurl Spinex 5.0 based on our sailmaker's recommendation.
