Hallo Sailing Friends,
Does anybody store the Liferaft in the floor locker behind the starboard steering wheel? I was told it’s the dedicated place. What are your experiences or recommendations?

Is the Liferaft in a soft bag in a locker a reasonable place or should it be in a container on the relling?

I think the locker is fine for liferaft storage. Obviously not used in an emergency. You would need to at least partially lower the transom to unlatch the locker. There is limited railing space available for storage

I have a six person ISO certified raft in a bag and store it in the locker below the cockpit floor on our 575.    While do-able,  its a heavy thing to deal with.

As I get older,  I think about lifting it in a hurry out of that locker and getting it to the stern for deployment.   I came to the conclusion that I would rather have a rail mounted deployment system where I just pull a rope and it drops / deploys.      The problem is that it likely means getting a new raft and selling the one I have.

No hurry,  but clearly something on my list.

We also have a 6 person ISO liferaft, in a bag.

The locker is also large enough for a 20l water container.

Agreed   We have our ditch bag in there as well with signaling devices,  spare radio, supplies, etc.

Space isn’t the issue.   Lifting the bag out when you are getting up there in years is.

Your comment raised a big smile, Rick.  We've worked on the 'geriatrification' of our boat so we can continue to choose destinations based on their attractions, not the availability of chiropractors or A&E units.

When coastal or offshore within easy reach of good SAR facilities we ditch the heavy ISO raft which is grossly over-specified for those risks in favour of a good coastal one weighing only about 11kg.  In those conditions its most unlikely that you'd have to spend more than 2-3 hours so confined and the thing can easily be thrown over the side even by a child.  Out of good SAR range its obviously a whole different story but we adapt to manage the risks as they evolve, making it easier on ourselves whenever we can.  In a boat the size of a 575 I'm surprised you don't have a crane Wink

I don't want to think about trying to open the floor locker on starboard side in case of emergency.
That's why I have build a box and glued (Sikaflex) and srewed it on back of the floor locker on port side, which is much easier to reach.
