Topic: Hanse alternator upgrade- looking for idea helpPosted: 21 February 2010 at 20:58 |

Greetings- We are developing a new style alternator upgrade for some Hanse yachts. The Hanse engine space seems very tight and finding room for a second alternator seems too tight. Were looking to see if the serpentine belt, 190 amp conversion will fit the various Hanse boats with the Yanmar JH4 engine.
I looking for some Hanse model owners that might be able to look at the photo and see if you think this arrangement would fit into the available engine space. Last year we viewed a bunch of Hanse boats and I think this upgrade will fit some of the models, but now, a year later I'm not sure what ones. Anybody have any ideas what engine space this kit might fit? Thanks for the help. Scott |

Scott,
I have a 370 with a yanmar ym30 engine; your upgrade will not work on a 370. This spring we will be installing a second alternator, if you can come up with a bracket for my instalation I am happy to buy it off you, however I could not find the ym30 on your web pages. The only two places I have identifed for a second alternator on a 370 is on top of the engine; but cannot see how we could manufacture a bracket, or in front of the water pump, low down with the alternator facing backwards. As I see it the water pump is on a removable bracket; I hope we can use this as a base to creating what we want. More than happy to work with you on a suitable bracket, however I am the only person I know in the process on setting a 370 up for a round the world trip, so your market will be small. Simon |

Thanks for the thoughts on the YM30 second alternator kit. We are developing two ideas.
One is to add a second drive pulley outside the original crank pulley. We do the same with the water pump and this allows the mounting of a larger alternator in place of the original Yanmar 80 amp. We can install up to 190 amp as the new alternator moves forward about two inches. The second idea is out in prototype form. We mount a second 100 amp alternator on the starboard side of the engine. The alternator can be reverse or forward mounted depending on space. From my memory of the Hanse I don't think the second alternator would fit, but maybe putting a larger alternator in place of the original to produce up to 190 amps. If you send me a PM I can email you a photo of the second alt kit. If your willing to work with us we can put together system for a larger alternator in place of the original. And I think your right, the market is very small for all these kits. Thanks again Scott |

One more thought. We have a YM30 kit going out shortly where they plan on re-mounting the water pump as you mention. If it helps when I get the photos of that upgrade I'll send them along to give you a head start if you decide to move your pump.
