Hi all,

I've been searching for a way to connect an extra screen to my laptop. I want to use this outside at the steering wheel and display a screen from the navigation software I use on the laptop (I use WINGPS voyager).

So far I've found only screens that are connected through a (double) USB cable. This would work perfect, apart from the fact that I cannot get them to work properly with an extended cable.

On the internet I found a manufactorer that supplies a screen that can be connected through wifi. The problem wi screen is mostly the price (about E 2.500).

With the new Ipad in store I wonder if it is possible to connect the Ipad tro the laptop with the wifi connection and use it as an extra screen.
The price is much better than the other screen I found and i could use the Ipad for other purposes as well. i know it isn't waterproof, but most days I go out with the family this won't be an issue.

If this might work I plan to connect it to a case fitted to the steel bar on top of the steering colum.

Anybody tried this yet?

Regards,

Ron

Hi Zeester

I really wouldn't use an ipad as an extra screen, its not designed for the marine environment as a fixed instrument, its not water proof and it will overheat very quickly in the sun, its fine for double checking waypoints and tracks, but dont fix it anywhere, you will be wasting ur money!

Have you thought about a toughbook CF-08 or CF-07? That is exactly what you are looking for. Since these are not new models you might get them "cheap".

Hi,

I've foud a solution for using an Ipad (or even an Ipod touch). Installing VNC viewer enables the Ipod or Ipad to be used as a clone of the laptop screen.

I haven't managed to use it as an extra screen (extension of the laptop) so the only minor issue now is that I have to select the exact screens on my laptop I want to see and manipulate on the Ipad. it is in a way not an extra screen but a clone, but looks promising.

The connection is perfect.

Regards,

Ron

Update:
using Air display does the trick. The screen works perfect. The only technical issue I have to work at is that I have the extra screen connected to the laptop through my home router or even through the router at the harbour.

I tried to install a local network directly from laptop to Ipod/Ipad. Haven't managed this part yet.

will be continued....
