All,
I just recently put a deposit down on a new 505, to be delivered next spring. This boat will be commissioned in Greifswald, then sailed to a departure port by a professional captain, and then shipped via SevenSeas to Newport, RI for final make ready and a few dealer-installed options. Question for the group: I'm thinking about going to Greifswald for the commissioning and pre-sale inspection, and if I do go, I'm wondering how much time to allow for this. My dealer (McMichaels) has a Hanse-experienced surveyor at the yard adjacent to the factory, who knows these boats well, and who will be tracking progress at the factory as the new boat is built and then commissioned. There's an argument in favor of letting this surveyor and my dealer take responsibility for delivering the boat to specifications, with no obvious defects. The dealer and I share a common interest in assuring the boat is delivered with all systems operating correctly. A Hanse-experienced surveyor will have a much better idea than I identifying potential issues that need to be addressed. That said, I'm sure I'd benefit from the visit, and likely will learn a few useful things along the way. Any counsel from those who've been down this path would be greatly appreciated. Very excited about the new 505. Harvey Stamford CT SV Penelope (come Spring) |

We visited Greifswald 3 times while our 445 was being constructed. I'm very glad we did as we were able to alter few important things to our liking while it was still possible mid-construction. I highly recommend visiting the yard.

Harvey:
We too just bought a 505 from McMichaels, the one in their inventory. We are going sailing this Saturday. And we are from Newport RI and the boat will be on a mooring near Ida Lewis YC. McMichaels is storing her for us for the winter and I will sail her down probably in late April from Mamaroneck to Newport. Look forward to sharing notes!!! Harvey, I can really say, that a visit to the yard for at least a full day is worthwile. You can see your boat and others in different building stages. Take many fotos of these stages, they will come in handy later on.
Prepare a list of questions and ask, ask, ask .... We had a wonderful guide and he went some extra miles explaining all the built phases. I was impressed about the QA System in place. Knowing a bit of your frivolous legal system, I can not really comment on the consequences if you do not have he surveyor/dealer Team supervising the built process. |

Steve,
Good luck with your new 505. I saw her a few times while she was in McMichael's inventory. Really a beauty. Look forward to crossing paths with you next year. Enjoy your sail this weekend. Harvey

Hi Harvey, I took delivery of my 505 at Greifswald 2 seasons ago . Once you have a date for delivery you need to be in Greifswald a day or 2 before to check her out of the water to make sure of what you have ordered including skin fittings if you intend to fit a water maker for example.
Weather can play a part and my launch date was held up for a week due to bad weather. If you wish to know all of my thoughts please ask by private message as I have a number of stories to tell.
