Currently sailing my 445 northbound on the east coast of NSW Australia. I have done a couple of longer trips in this boat, last year clocking up 4000 miles. Sailing typically solo, the standard AP has not been great sailing downwind. And I rarely sail dead square, preferring to run 150 true with gybes as required!
I bit the bullet and bought a Precision Nine rate compass, replacing the originally installed FC40. I mounted the P9 on the rear side of the front bulkhead, right at water level. An easy hook up as there is a simnet 3 way back bone at the mast base. So plugged straight in. I have replace my masthead wind vane with a blue tooth set up , so a spare port ready to go. Now, how does it work? A total revaluation, I set the AP42 to true wind, dial in as deep as I dare, and she steers as well as a human! Bonus is much less wheel movement, so less stress on the steering gear and AP actuator too. |
