Am I correct in assuming that this is to help prevent a leaking mast?
If the two stays either side of the mast below are tight then the rubber gaiter should do its job, but it does look neat lets hope it stay as clean.

In very hard sailing conditions the mast flexed a little and some water entered.
This system has been in place for 8 years and for the moment it is perfect. The system is composed of a gasket made with a rubber inner tube of a car wheel and on the upper part it is closed with waxed thread to make an o-ring effect. Then the leather cover is to protect it from the Sun. |
