Putting a solar panel on foredeck. Easiest way to come in w masthead electronic wires. That is on the port side. Has anyone led a wire in the ceiling of cabintop across the boat and down into the stb side. I want to get to the battery compartment.
On my wiring docs, it says wires go across the boat in front of the main sliding hatch from the cockpit. There is a channel it shows. I can't see how I can access this.

I put 11 solar panels on my deck of 458, drilled the holes thru the deck, then wiring goes under ceiling to port main cable channel ( the one that carries cables to windlass), from there to reach battery bank is very easy. Pulling out ceiling lights, and exploring the path with endoscope helps, also I drilled 1-1/2" holes in the ceiling cover to facilitate snaking the wires, the holes can be replugged with some nice plugs, plastic, stainless steel, Amazon has lots of options. Wiring thru mast channel is complicated, lots of wires already there, wouldnt go with this path. Cheers!

Boatman - I removed the ceiling panels on my 348 around the mast support and removed some of the ceiling lights. Space is very tight in the "channel" where Hanse ran the wires from the mast to the AC & DC panels on port midship. I could not force a leader into that path. For this season, I placed temporary solar panels on the garage hood and ran wires through the starboard skylight hatch, with clips down the starboard side to the battery area. I installed a Victron solar controller under L-bunk forward of the sink, that is synced with my Victron BMV-e, coupled with the Victron app for monitoring. This system works great. I usually see full charge under way and at anchor. Volts stay above 12.8 through the night. The only drawback with this panel placement is sail or boom shading. My next phase will be to mount semi-permanent panels atop a bimini which I will have built this winter. The bimini will rarely be shaded. From there it should be an easy 1-hole wire run into the transom and starboard suite, then up the starboard side.
Good Luck!

Not sure what you mean by garage...
I have mounted semi flex 175W on bimini. Did this design before I got the boat, and didn't know stb side backstay had the block and tackle on it. (Have another thread on changing this, but seems to be do able). In the meantime I have been racking my brains with a fish tape and fiberglass sticks, string, and a boroscope trying to figure out how to get a wire from the stern of the boat to my Victron 100/20 MPPT also located under the L section settee in front of the sink. I thought this would be easy, but spent a day leading a string from the controller around galley and thru bulkhead into space below locker in stb aft cabin. (Pulled out the AC outlet). However, there is no way I have seen to get from there to the stern without making holes. I had thought possibly under the berth where the fuel tank is, but this is an enclosed tub and I didn't want to make a hole there. Then I thought up the hull behind the locker, and possibly I could get along a channel along the deck/hull seam, but not sure a path exists, and if it does, not sure I could fish it. So my solution is that I can get wires from the stern of the stb side into the section where the access panel for the winch/instruments are, run it to where the locker is, drill through, see pic where blue circle, into locker, down inside of locker, drill again into compartment below locker where I have a string to pull to battery. Yech. 2 Holes. My entry point for the solar panel output leads is probably next to or below the stern light on the stb transom. I am not a fan of below the stern light though. I have also led a string from where the AC panel under the chart table on the port side is to the stern. That was pretty easy. According to the wiring diagram, there is a section in one of the cross stringers that goes from the port side to the stb side batteries. I have poked and proded with the snake and have not been able to get it across or find this path all the way through. This would be best solution. I wouldn't have to change the backstay, there is no stern light to get in the way. I have found where the speaker wire from the stb speaker above the batteries goes across in front of the companionway. I have not yet tried to see if I can get from the speaker to the radio over the ceiling. If I can, I can get wires from the port side aft to the battery compartment, I think. You can imagine my frustration. My previous boats, a beneteau, lagoon, and even a hunter all had conduits with strings left to pull wires. Here are pics of my solar on the bimini and of stb aft cabin to drill. Well, can't upload as my pics are too large, and even when I tried to compress them, they were still about 600k. Will try something else and if I can , will upload. |

I also had some frustration inititally with my projects when I got my 458 3 years back, and cannot really comment on Beneteaus, but after installing electric winches, watermaker, three a/c units for saloon and cabins, solar panels on deck, LFPOs, inverters, and so on, I pretty much can say that wiring and plumbing on this boat can be done from any point to any point without a problem. Yes, some drilling is needed of course. Good luck with your projects!

Hello Boatman,
as I am planning to upgrade my winch to electric, I will have to draw cables also from the stern to the batteries. Therefore I am interested in the path you found for them. Could you please try again to post the pics? Or perhaps send me a PM ? Would be great! Thanks in advance!

Frank. I have not found a great way for this yet. I assume you are looking for electric winches on both sides? Before going to the battery, the winches need to go to a large breaker. These are located on the port side behind the opening of the back cushion next to chart table. From there they go to the stb side battery. This is led underneath in a channel I think in a stringer. I have been unable to get my snake to go between both sides in this channel though! It is filled with 00 or bigger cables.
I am unable to upload pics here, I can't compress enough. PM me your email and I can send to you.

Hello boatman,
thanks for your quick answer. For now, I am only going to upgrade the winch on the starboard side, so I am especially interested in the route from the winch (passing through the space beside the fuel tank?) to the batterie compartment. (The circuit breaker will be placed near the batteries.) My email address is : waterkant@hetnet.nl Thanks in advance !

Sorry for the length of this post, trying to give as much info as I can... In the stern compartment, I thought I could snake from there as the gas line from the propane tank goes to the galley, but it turns out the hole the line goes thru is sealed. I have found another conduit that takes the stern light and gps on the sterns' wires , but have not found out where it goes to. Both need power, so they would have to go to the port side, but not sure as I have not snaked it fully with my boroscope. For the winches, you have sort of easy access to them via the access panel in the ceiling of the stb berth (6 screws). These somehow get to the port side since they goto a breaker first. You can get your head into this compartment, I have not traced where they go. The engine controls go to the stern compartment, then down a channel by the midship aft end of the stb berth into the engine room. I had thought that to be a good channel to the batteries as you would figure that might have a connection. But there is none. Each bilge compartment is connected by weep holes, if you don't have an issue drilling more to route the cable, you can probably do it this way. I think I am resigned to putting my entry on rail either at the very stern, or right in front of the stb side foremost stern pulpit stanchion (across from winch). Either way, you can get to the wires from the access panel. I can then run the wires foward in the channel from the access panel, but will have to drill a hole to drop it down into the vent hole in the top of the locker cabinet. From there, drill hole in back corner of each shelf, then in bottom step to get to where AC outlet at bottom of cabinet base is, then I can pull the wire to the battery. For me this means a short show of duplex 10 gauge above cabinet. For you, this might be too many bends of 00 gauge? Might be better to run by fuel tank? Or maybe drill hole in bulkhead between galley and aft cabin? I wish there was a way to pose this question to Hanse customer service? I am really frustrated.

Boatman,
Have you tried lifting up the “step” in the aft locker? Some of those flat panels can be removed using the suction cup.
