Regarding the use of acids to dissolve calcium carbonate in the tank,  I did buy some muriatic acid and tried using that (diluted to 4%) to clean my tanks.   After some experimenting I’m not confident that it would have removed a significant amount of the “rock” in my tank.   I collected some of the chunks of rock that were dislodged by the pressure washer and tried soaking them in the muriatic acid.   There was a lot of impressive effervescence but even after a day of bubbling away, the rock wasn’t reduced in size very much.   I think it may help “soften up the defences” a little but in my case I think mechanical removal was the way to go.   I shopped for other chemical solutions too but none were available in Canada so I haven’t tied them.  Just sharing my experiences here, in case anyone has the same situation as mine.  Maybe it’s just the North Pacific seawater, or maybe the Canadian urine…

Stuart - I do appreciate your environmental concerns but 'Andrex' and suchlike are entirely composed of natural fibres and are totally & rapidly biodegradable, unlike cheaper brands.  That's the reason why they don't clog up the system.  If you check out the exact composition of a brand you can avoid the need to store and properly (not landfill) dispose of potentially hazardous biological waste when out of reach of a pump-out facility or when over 3 miles from land and over the capacity of your holding tank.  In those circumstances you'd have to pump human waste direct to sea anyway.
