I'd like to install an AIS Transponder on my 2017 415 and wondering what others have done? Do I need another screen or will the current chart plotter display the info?

If you fit the B&G AIS unit it is just another black box which is connected into the B&G system and comes up on your charter plotter screen and your radar screen or overlay.

It doesn't need to be a B&G unit. I used a Digital Yacht AIT2000 unit which works fine with the original Simrad plotter on my 2012 415. Any AIS transponder that outputs NMEA2000 data will work.
You will need a separate VHF antenna and GPS mushroom for a proper installation. I fitted these to an antenna pole at the port quarter.

If you already have AIS receiver it doesn't even need to be N2K. My £200 transceiver is standalone so I only switch it on when I need it.
Much less expensive than the B&G unit.

I find it very useful to have the AIS display overlaid on the chart at the helm. Having N2K connection makes it easy to install and set up. I agree that B&G (and Simrad) kit is expensive, though, which is why I used a third party unit.

I wasn't suggesting not having the received AIS information on the chart. This comes from the receiver which most Hanse have integrated into the V50/60 VHF. Merely that the transmitter does not actually provide any information to the source boat so it doesn't need to be linked to N2K.

You can use a splitter and your current VHF antenna. But at least in the US you need a dedicated GPS input for the AIS. I put the mushroom on the aft railing with a small cable gland for the wire. Any N2k unit will feed AIS data to your MFD. There are lots of options. Some will provide a WiFi data feed as well. |

Belated but relevant.
The Vesper AIS units are awesome, and have an excellent anchor watch function The XB-8000 unit has N2K, and NMEA 0183 to output to many VHF units for emergency position. It comes with a standalone GPS, and also provides a WiFi network for about 5 users. You need to use a Vesper splitter for combined aerial with VHF. It also tracks other AIS and has an App allowing visual checking other vessels without using a chartplotter, although it also feeds the N2K chartplotters. I have been using one for the last 4 years, and I think it is awesome.¹

Unfortunately Garmin who acquired Vesper have stopped manufacturing most of the range.
