To all Hanse 630 owners. We (JEFA steering) have received some inquires how to adjust the chains on the Hanse 630 steeing system and how it is possible that on some boats the chain has slack after a few hours sail. Please go to our ftp server and open the following PDF file: ftp://ftp.jefa.com/steering/installation-guides/Hanse_630/
On detail B you can see 8 bolts holding the gearbox in position. From the factory we only tighten 2 off them firmly as the yard will have to loosen them with installation to adjust the chain tension. In some cases this doesn't happen and only 2 bolts are tightened. The gearbox will move upwards under load, slacking the chain tension. Please undo all 8 botls, and let the gearbox "hang in the chain" as this is a ood pre-tension for the chain. Then tighten the bolts to prevent the gearbox from running upwards. When you can really feel the chain and the run isn't smooth, you have overtentioned the chain. Make sure the chain is nicely greased !

Success!

Yes, but is also very good that Hanse selected one of the best for the steering systemLamp.

Actually would be very nice if suppliers of the various components we have on board would do the same as Jefa.

We have to be realistic. Hanse will never be in a position to provide detailed and technical answers to components they source.

I encourge the various suppliers to join the forum and do like Jefa.

Well done Armin!

I totally agree with this and certainly the 470E lacks a good owners manual.  On my other boat (a Sadler 29) the Owners Manual is excellent and sets out comprehensively what is on the boat and also what regular maintenance etc to do on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.  I have circuated this manual to Hanse UK and recommended that they do the same for the 470!
