Hello, I have searched the entire thread and learned a lot. I am looking to replace all the Halyards and wondering what size most use and line quality.
Also does anyone know how long the Lifelines are from bow pulpit to stern rail. I am not near the boat and this needs to be re done. Thanks if anyone has info. It is great to have such a forum and good people. |

Hi Brad - this is the spec that my rigger used about 4 years ago. I've since gone to dyneema with a braid covering for the halyards stepping down a size. However, I'd strongly advise that you reconsider running lifelines along the side decks; if you do a google search you'll find plenty of hard evidence about why this isn't a good idea. I've moved to a series of hard points that stop me falling over the guardwires. Its not perfect and I'll be refining it a lot this season, but I reckon falling over untethered is better than falling over, brought up with a (literally) rib-crunching stop and then dragged through the water.

Hi Boston,
I replaced the main halyard on my 2006 H400 with 145 feet of Sampson Warpspeed II 7/16 inch line. It’s good light low-stretch line (and expensive) but one thing you should be prepared for with any of these dyneema lines is that they are slippery and will probably not hold well in the clutches. My main halyard used to slip even with my previous Marlowbraid halyard and I had to add a second clutch on the mast. With the new Warpspeed line the halyard slipped through both clutches with just the weight of an unloaded sail. I replaced the aluminum cam and base with ceramic parts and it holds well now but you should be prepared to make this change as well if you go with a high-end material. I will be upgrading my jib halyard clutch as well for the same reason.

That is great info. Thank you.
Also if anyone is around a boat this weekend I need to get the length of the Life Line wire. This is stern pulpit to bow pulpit. Thanks again

I replaced many of the original halyards and sheets with endura
braid from NE ropes. You might find something with less stretch, but
Endura Braid has a great hand and runs nicely thru all the blocks and
stops in all the stoppers the way it should. I
still have a lot of endura on a roll (14mm) if anyone is interested as
it was cheaper to share the cost of a roll with a friend who was
replacing his as well. I just haven't gotten around to putting it on eBay yet. ![]() They come in 600' spools. My friend (Swan 53) and I shared the cost as it ended up saving us over US$2.00/foot. ![]() Pulling it thru the mainsheet system....

Thanks for sharing this - it is incredibly useful. I've been trying to work out whether my measuring skills are falling short, or if the site I was looking at with guidelines for halyard/sheet lengths and diameter was wrong. Your Rigger's measurements align with what I measured for a new main sheet for our 400e (2008), which is reassuring! I'll go for 24m of 12mm braid on braid. Many thanks!

I wish to replace my sheet of our self tacking jib on our 400, 2010 and Selden mast. What would be the recommended length?
