Dear All
As you are possibly aware I have been gong through, among other things,a re-engine from the D3 110 to the Yanmar JH4 110.The Yan mar dealer here in Phuket has done a great job and we have it installed and purring like a kitten. The last issue we seem to face is the positioning of the fresh water heater. As we are all aware that Hanse with the D3 as the heater placed directly above the engine. The Yanmar Engineer and the installation manual says that this is completely wrong and that the heater should be next to or on the same level as the cap where you top up the coolant or had Volvo devised a system to solve this issue. I am still not really understanding the issue but if there is any one who has done a re engine or indeed has a hanse with the new Yanmar installed I am interested where the water heater is located and if it is above the engine was there any special plumbing done to the system. My Engineer is highly experienced and he is very concerned about this installation!! Best regards to all Duncan |

I’m not sure if it’s possible on the 575, but on the 588 the water heater is located under the floor. It’s in the compartment just aft of the fuel tank on the strbd side. It’s the Quick 40 ltr unit.

Leon is right: in the hanse 588 there is no connection for the hot water with the D3 engine. I think that the reason is another accessory, the Eberspacker hydronic M2, that is a heater designed to heat the water separately, by using the diesel fuel, in alternative to the electric heater.

On our 575 - June 2014 the header tank for the D3 coolant is outboard from the water heater in the engine compartment and is at a level about equal to the top of the water heater.

Agree with Leon. On our 575 the water heater is under the starboard side floorboards between the engine compartment and the nav station. The only connection I know of is that the hoses to transfer heat from the engine come from the volvo closed fresh water system to the water heater compartment for exchange inside the heater. So running the engine will heat the fresh water rather than requiring AC. It would seem simple to me to simply connect those same hoses to the Yanmar. I know you can get into issues with the fuel tanks on lift issues. I was going to install a dual racor filter on our boat and found that everyplace I could put it had lift issues. Not heard of lift issues on the water system/boiler. Edited by Black Diamond - 20 November 2024 at 20:06 |

Dear All
Many thanks for all of the knowledge. So indeed I have a large space big enough for the water heater behind the nav station. So my plan will be to install the heater there and plumb it in to the new Yanmar BUT At this moment in time I am going to keep valves to the engine closed and use AC mode for my limited use of hot water The project will wait to the end offer season here in Phuket! Need to get sailing. It has been a long time! Cheers to all and thanks to this forum. Duncan

Great. Prefilled and circulate that engine loop in the heater before closing the valves and topping off the engine level. The heater will draw a good amount of coolant !
