Last Saturday (23rd) June saw 1735 boats participating in the annual Round the Island Race. This annual event organised by the Island Sailing Club in Cowes is the largest yacht race in the world and the fourth largest participatory sports event in the UK after the London Marathon, the Great North Run and the Great South run.
The course is approximately 50NM anti-clockwise around the Isle of Wight of the south coast of England from Cowes back to Cowes. There are two main classes - IRC and the Island Sailing Club's own ISC club class. Full details can be found here on the race's own web site
Out of 804 entries in the ISC class there were 14 Hanses. The results were as follows:
55th Hanse 312 Scotch Mist GBR 9168T
164th Hanse 315 Jodeanni GBR 9522T
219th Hanse 315 Winsome of Wight GBR 9932T
240th Hanse 342 Scorpio GBR 9824T
318th Hanse 301 Cloudy Bay GBR 9955T
343rd Hanse 411 Nellie of Hythe GBR 9660T
370th Hanse 430e Custard Pie GBR 1160L
388th Hanse 301 Gretel 263
483rd Hanse 400e Grey Goose GBR 9619T
496th Hanse 301 Pean GBR 8352T
542nd Hanse 370 Hey Jude GBR 9538T
543rd Hanse 341 Blue Horizon GBR 9021T
548th Hanse 370 Renegade GBR 9791T
595th Hanse 315 Karen GBR 9973T
Out of 616 entries in the IRC class there were 6 Hanses. Their results were as follows:
19th Hanse 291 White Mischief GBR 4888T
387th Hanse 370 Serendip 4 GBR 9997T
470th Hanse 371 Pero Et GBR 5371R
536th Hanse 371 Thunderflash GBR 9422T
544th Hanse 371 Teucer GBR 9281T
No Declaration Hanse 470e Ghost GBR 9891T (Ghost would have been about 535th had they declared)
As you can infer from these results (and the overall results on the above link) the conditions - both tidal and wind - suited the smaller boats which have done better than the larger boats across the field. The ISC class was won by a 26 foot South Coast One Design and IRC by a Folkboat.
It was a great day out. The highlight for us was having Francis Chichester's Gipsy Moth IV ask us for "water to tack" on the edge of Ryde sands.
