Hi, we are still struggling with the repairs to Night Train following the lightning damage we suffered last September. The final bit of the jig saw is to replace the saloon lighting switch and associated controller. I took the drawers out from under the sink to see how the switch panel comes out but can't see any obvious fixings, so I have nasty feeling that it is glued in.
I obviously don't want to damage the timber veneer, so am reluctant to try and prise it off, has anyone had any experience with these?
All the best

Paul,

Are you sure that this piece really is defective? What you describe are just the switches, the real controller with all its electronics which controls the dimming and on/off is the grey square box, approx. 20x20 cm-2 mounted at the port outside wall right of the navigation switchboard, at least on my 385.

You can barely see it if you open the switchboard hatch, you may have to remove the wooden hatch at its right (if the positions are the same at our slightly different boats).

I believe it is more likely that the controller got crashed by the stroke.

Take care, good luck.

Maybe if it's glued on you could put a thin plastic strip against the veneer to protect it and using a broad sharp chisel tap down into the glue joint. That way, hopefully the veneer wont be damaged beyond the edge of the switch unit, even if the old switch unit might get wrecked

I'm a bit late on this thread but I have problems with the switch panel. I spoke to Andy Locke at Inspiration Marine the UK agent. He was not sure whether the dimming of the saloon lights was controlled by the grey box or the lighting panel. He took a panel & found that it has a PCB so thinks that the dimming is probly controlled by that.

For removal of the panel this is done from the front. A very thin flat screwdriver blade should be inserted between the chome bezel & the shiny black face of the panel. There are 4 clips, 2 on each side located about a quarter of the distance from the top & bottom of the panel. Carefully prize the black plastic panel out using the screwdriver blade at the points I've indicated. It is possible that the Crome bezel may sustain damage in the process.

I am waiting for the arrival of a new switch panel before I start the procedure. I'm hoping this might be the solution as replacing the grey box is probably very expensive. Hope this contribution is of help.

Nigel

Hi Nigel
Thanks for the advice, I will try that although I am hoping the new lighting panel I have ordered from Hanse will come with a new bezel too. But I will wait and see.
For your info the lighting panel cost Euro 283.50 and the grey control box 433.50 delivered.
All the best

When I spoke to the Hanse Agent he was not certain if the panel controlled the light dimming or the box. In view of the cost I've asked that they take back the panel if it doesn't solve the problem or find out for sure that it does control the function.
