I sail my 445 mostly single handed and usually two up on passage. I have not found it too much. I think the size is the sweet spot for length vs single handed friendliness balance of I’m honest. It was one of the factors in my decision to go to this size.

hi.  Don't mean to cut into discussion.  I'm looking at a 418 3 cabin 2 head but the new design doesn't leave room for a generator or water maker like the older 415.
My dealer suggests the 2 cabin layout and use the utility area instead -!or upgrade to 458!
I plan to do a lot of single handed trips and feel the 458 would be too big.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I’ve ended up sailing my 418 solo far more than I expected -
Mainly because my partner has a persistent frozen shoulder and was also isolating during Covid. I’ve put a few solo videos up on YouTube (these really show her on passage rather than in any mooring situation & I do them just so my better half can at least participate “virtually”) I manage the 418 just fine, especially with the electric winches and after fitting a remote control for the bow thruster, which has been really helpful. The 458 is appreciably bigger. In theory no reason why you couldn’t (after all it’s the same set up & gear) but it’s a lot more space and a lot more money if you are just sailing on your own, so I guess the question is, is it worth it?

I bought the dealers stock / demo 418 but would, out of choice, have ordered the single aftcabin and had the big locker. (In hindsight I’m happy to have the 2nd aftcabin mine came with)

Good luck whatever you decide, I can’t speak highly enough about the impeccable manners and handling of mine

I had a 2 cabin 385 and loved the storage available.  I singlehanded this boat a fair bit and found it reasonably easy to manage.
I now have a 458 and I have some reservations about single handing, although I have sailed with one 1 inexperienced crew.
The storage in the bow locker is amazing and now I can have two single crew without one sleeping in the saloon.  There is lots of room for additional equipment to be installed.
I have the standard slab-reefed main and this is the area that needs most work.  I am 1.88m and can only just attach the halyard without the mast steps.  With the FCL sail which is very stiff, zipping the stack-pack requires some agility.  It is a big rig for one person to handle.  We got caught in 50kt+ gusts today and I was glad to have my experienced crew with me.

For a watermaker on a 418 try ‘Rainman’ naked 230 or 115 VAC model. The Pressure Supply Unit (PSU), pre-filter, and control panel will fit under the saloon stbd settee inboard in front of the sink. The maximum size Reverse Osmosis (RO) units will fit horizontally on the stbd hull behind the settee back rest cushion. Inlet water might be able to be ‘Teed’ off the toilet sea water supply and the brine discharge overboard ‘Teed’ into the galley sink drain. Run the power cord under the deck boards and leave the plug end coiled up in the wine cellar. When you want to run simply plug into the AC power outlet under the chart table. The PSU might be able to be powered off the batteries via the inverter however also carry a Honda EU22i (2200 watt) as a preferred power source if desired. The portable generator will fit comfortably in one of the transom lockers. Good luck with your boat selection, both the 418 and 458 are great boats.

We had our first blockage after 7 weeks. We had a lot of people aboard recently and noticed the tank indicator had turned red. After reading the posts on here I got in the dingy to try and unblock the outlet, but it is too far under the hull to reach without getting into the water. No thanks!😜

So we taped over the breather and I put my hand over this while my partner gently and slowly pumped water out of the toilet. Gently because I didn’t want to risk compacting the blockage, nor blowing the tape off the vent.

After three pumps, material dislodged from the outlet. I removed the tape and could hear suction through the breather. The tank was emptying!

I then observed as water was flushed through the system till the outflow was clear.

No special tools required, just a roll of carpet tape.

Pete,

Great tip, thanks for sharing!

Might want to think about the cleaning the breather after such an exercise, just a single screw to undo but the wire filter does get clogged with any overflow!!

Cheers,

I retrofitted a water maker after accepting.     In my case a 38gph compact AC unit mounted in my "utility cabin" on the 575.     The intake came from a salt water head that I converted to fresh water and I put a thru hull on the waterline with a t-valve to redirect the discharge back into a bucket to re-use winterization fluid (rather than dumping it over the side).    See pic.

Jon,
I removed the filter from mine, I could not see what function it provides, other than getting blocked.

Thanks for the recommendations, but I don’t think that’ll be necessary as the overflow is way above where the blockage was. I had a look down the pump out cap before divising my scheme and the rising levels when pumping were clear of “material”. Thank goodness!! 🥴
