Hi all, in preparation of a 4 month sabbatical next year (Azores) I've built myself a windvane last winter. Tests, all with reasonable weather shows it works marvelous! Did a lot of other improvements a.o. solar panels, bypassing ignition key, (vertical) anchor winch and more. looking forward to next year!!

You are on a fairly close reach & most wind vanes work well with wind forward of the beam. I have an aries lift up wind vane on a hanse 311. If is very windy it is ok on a broad reach altnough it steers an eratic course. However my raymarine ev1 cannot steer the boat on this course so the aeries is better. On the run my aeries is unreliable. How do you find yours. If you designed it yourself some details would be interesting. My liftup aeries is very heavy for a 311 and now i have a new lathe and mill i am thinking of making something lighter.
I would be interested in hearing more about your one. I assume it works on a pendulum oar Edited by samuel - 28 August 2016 at 20:41 |

Samuel, first, the vane is a DIY kit sold by http://www.bouvaan.nl/ the parts are CNC prefab exept the tubes, the whole set is about 1200 Euros (don't know how much GBP that is nowadays ;-). The finishing, welding and cutting the pipe material is the real DIY.
I didn't try the vane with running winds yet, however I think most vanes will have difficulties on a running course unless there is enough apparent wind. I have a Simrad autopilot built on my boat in a non standard configuration (see earlier posts), I think hower that all these electrical pilots will be destroyed if you use for prolonged periodes at sea, apart from the continuous 2 to 4 amps they consume. It uses indeed a pendulum oar as you can see on the website.
