Absolutely wonderful achievement Anne and Alaine.  I am sure I speak for all other Hanse owners in sending congratulations to you both - and well done to Uhambo also.

No longer a Hanse owner - but loved the one we had!

Lotus,
I would be very grateful for your advise in regard to the issues you had with your 430. Did you work through the local dealer or did you go direct to the factory. How were you treated by the factory and what comments would you make in respect of any future issues.
My own 430 is due soon and like you am an advocate of hull surveys. Problems can occur through no fault of the factory or build quality and it is a "wake up call" for anyone. However if the variations are happening at time of production it brings into question the veracity of the companies claims as to the solidity of construction, thickness of the hull etc.
Just as important is the test carried out by quality control before despatch of the finished product.

Hi,
My best advice to anyone accepting a new yacht would be to have the boat inspected prior to handover, and before the 1st year warranty expires after the boat has been in the water for a season.

I thought our 430e had minor issues with the mast step hence getting her surveyed (ps the UK agent said shes was fine), however after having the survey carried out at 12months, it was entirely rejected. It was a very stressful time indeed and as my lawyers stated "no owner should have to go through this".

Get her surveyed since as you say, it can go wrong quality wise despite looking very shiney!

Thank you Lotus. I sincerely commiserate with the situation you found yourself in. Surely no additional cost should accrue to yourself in this case?
About 6 years ago I bought a "B" boat and had a number of warranty issues interior and exterior which the loacl agent was eventually forced to repair at his expense but only after my lawyers had written to him. Sadly there doesn't seem to be any other way for an agrieved owner to get full compensation here unless an insurance claim is made.
I hope you future sailing is enjoyable and brings you many pleasant days on the water.

In nearly three years and 14000 milles we did not have serious issues but the bad design of some parts of the boat:
= the Facnor furler which was replaced by a Selden 300TD: bad design and poor quality
= the boom vang: poor quality, still pending: handle with care!
= the Lewmar blocks: poor quality changed for Harken
= the mooring and the chain locker: bad design. we made some changes but still not 100% satisfied
= the standard halyard: poor quality I knew from the beginning and I changed them for dyneema in 2008
= the forward cabin bed: poor design and different from what we ordered. SHE IS STILL UPSET
= the lack of water-tightness of the cockpit floor locker and between the lazarette and the rest of the boat: bad design, I built bulheads in the lazarette and changed the seal and the locks.
= the rubber boot: still no solution
= the holding tanks: bad design they hold well but not release!
= the acrylic panels: lost; the forward one was replaced by teck in 2010
= opening windows in the saloon: bad design will be changed for fixed ones
= bilge pumps:poor design: added three 4000G/H Rule bilge pumps
But the boat, is strong reliable, fast and she performed very well with short-handed crew

Alain,
We had very much the same list of issues all of which have been resolved by ourselves or by Hanse. We have not had problems with the side windows or holding tanks and our forward cabin bed is excellent. How did you get all the water out of the boat once you had stopped water coming in via the lazarette locker hatch and the stern bulkhead? We are now watertight but cannot get the last of the water out of the bilges.

We also had a 2 meter section of hull below the waterline where the outer epoxy layer was not properly bonded to the foam core. This had to be stripped out and replaced. We also found a number of voids in the topside gelcoat which were ground out and filled. Both of these issues were detected by tap-hammer test.

We replaced the mainsail plastic cars with ball bearing cars and the sail is now much easier to raise and, more importantly, comes all the way down when needed. We added blocks to the reefing cringles on the back of the mainsail so the reefing line tugs the sail down equally at front and back so we get a much better sail shape when reefed.

My view is that there are bound to be issues with any new boat, especially a new model, and they are there to be resolved.

Overall we are delighted with the boat and have done around 4000nm, mostly shorthanded, over two seasons.
