Oh dear, commiserations I didnt know anyone was stupid enough to try powder coating in such a marine application. Creative acountant saving on parts? Aluminium of the correct grade with anodised finish works its cheap. In my experience Powder coating would be just lucky to get out of gaurantee period. Perry

Matt,
Is the powder coating you are referring to the visible white frame in my posted pictures? If so, how much does each new aluminum, anodized frame cost?

Some of the powder coating has let go on several hatches, but alas, no leaks from this source yet. Been keeping close track of this issue. My hatches have fortunately been quite, dry save for the loosened fittings previously mentioned.
Not looking forward to swapping them out when the time comes. Is it possible to remove the powder coating from the frames (when they start leaking) and using the originals in bare aluminum?

I dont know. But my aproach would be to take a frame to your local anodising shop and let them look. If the powder coat was purely cosmetic because some design guy thought it would look pretty, its likely that underneath the powder coat the frame is the same aluminium as the normal anodised frame. Re-anodising damaged anodised parts usually requires a complete strip off of the old anodising, to get a good new finish in the new anodising. This can sometimes be a chemical strip, you have to ask locally. Perry |

Leon,
I took a closer look. It’s gotta be the sealant under the frame on the outside. I like your idea (seems the easiest and quickest) of putting a bead of sealer around the outside edge. What did you use - some type of Sika? The 3M products are easier to come by here. ![]() |

Yes, that is the area in question. I used ordinary hardware store window silicone. 3M polyurethane would be better but messier to work with. Make sure to clean it well and degrease with a solvent. I’m sorry about the cracks on the interior. You have more of them than I, and early on as well. I’m guessing they are stress cracks from movement.
