Has anyone figured out a way to test the bilge pumps? I am reluctant to fill up the bilge with water to test the pumps. Because of the hull shape i think that would be a a lot of water and much of it would remain in the recesses. I tried to make a dam to put around the pump to contain just enough water to test the pumps (electric and manual pumps) but have not been successful.

Hi, every now and then I pour a couple of buckets of water into the bilge to test the pump. I can tolerate a bit of water in the bilge, knowing that the pump will work when I need it.

Gary,

Most bilge pumps can be removed from their mounting base and put into a shallow container of water to test. The manual pump is more difficult but the same can be done with this pump. The bilge pumps never seem to get all the water out of a compartment so we use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to get all the water out.

If you have a float switch we test this regularly by lifting the lever and you hear the pump.

Also you might want to consider a bilge alarm so when the float switch activates it sets off an alarm that can be heard before the boat floods. We set this up from the article below includung mute switch and it works really well. A simple low cost but reassuring addition!

Likely, there is a float switch near the pump that you can raise and hear a typical pumping sound. Making a dam and filling around the pump with water will only test it if the float switch gets underwater.
