I am considering building a 575 and have been doing my research on various systems. I visited the factory in Greifswald a few weeks ago, took a lot of notes, and asked a lot of questions. Its a really impressive operation but I do have a few areas of concern and I'd like to ask the owners out there what they think:
Anyone have any comments on the above? Rick S/V Black Diamond Newport, RI. |

You might want to look at the problems we had ...
http://www.myhanse.com/volvo-d3-engine-failure_topic9860.html The location of the generator made it very awkward to do this job.

Hi cant comment on the generator sorry but can on the thru hull and ball valve fittings.
The ball valves, elbows and hose tails are not bronze as you suspect but are in fact brass, i would ask the make and material type for the synthetic thru hull fittings, these should be glass filled nylon, i suspect the Hanse ones are made by Plastimo or the like and are Polypropylene. As part of buying almost all the production brand boats you should factor in a replacement of the thru hulls and valves. European regulations state these only need to last 10 years and as such all manufacturers use sub standard materials, pages have been written on this forum about this subject. Its shame Hanse dont bite the bullet and go to Tru Design glass filled nylon for everything and simply do it right first time, they cost no more than the brass ones. Glass filled nylon thru hulls, elbows, ball valves and tails will last the life of the boat, wont seize, wont suffer electrolysis or corrosion. ![]() |

Hi Rick,
I replied to your post a bit earlier about commissioning so may be too late about the generator. We stamped our feet very hard with a Hanse as we did not want the FP generator. We went for a Cummings Onan. In doing that we sacrificed the port head and turned it into a utilities room incorporating the washing machine as well. The Onan is a seriously good machine but it is very heavy. However, it now leaves loads of room in the engine room and maintenance on the Onan is fairly straight forward. |
