Hi.
Is there much performance lost going to the shallow keel? My plan is to cruise - not race, mainly Caribbean but may do some heavy sea, open water passages as well. Thoughts?

Although I sail mainly in a very shallow waters area I'm so pleased to have deep finkeel (neraly 2 m - 6ft 6")
Yacht is sailing so well and there's nearly no inconvenience. it's just a one foot difference. Unless you get no caution and get so close to ground, accesses are the same |

Depends when you want to go in the Caribbean. If you want to spend time in the Bahamas then shallower the better. I understand the Hanse 460 full keel is 2.25m and the shallow draft keel is 1.75m. Our shallow draft 575 has a 2.25m draft which was too deep for lots of places in the Bahamas.

Agree totally depends on the places you plan to sail. Most UK marina are dredged to 2m and always silt up so rarely as 'advertised'!
We have a shoal keel on our 418, sailing performance is great and has taken the stress out of visiting many places, especially in tidal waters. This has allowed us to visit smaller harbours and rivers we would never of otherwise experienced, especially in France. |
