Vulcan 7 to replace Triton - will it fit?

   I have a single Triton on my port cockpit coaming a second Triton with the autopilot control on the starboard coaming.I would like to replace the port Triton with one of the smaller Vulcan MFDs.  I was originally thinking of getting a 5" unit which I know will fit however there are some good deals on the Vulcan 7FS which appears to have been replaced by the 7R.  I can currently get a 7FS for little more than a 5" AND I can get a C-MAP chart bundled.

I did a quick measure up when I was on the boat last year, but my main thoughts were about the 5" version then and wonder if anyone else has done this and can confirm that the Vulcan 7 will fit?

The size is 203(w) x 147(h) x 83(d) mm (with sun cover) or 228(w) x 172(h) for optional flush mounting.  I am not sure why the flush mount option adds so much!

I know that the smaller boats (315?) that do not have a central cockpit table have a Vulcan mounted on the coaming but I'm not sure which size they use and if their coaming is the same size as the 385..

	If you're going to use the Vulcan as an actual chart plotter I encourage you to check what charts look like on such a small screen. Being a little older and needing reading glasses for small print, I decided to stay away from even the 7 inch and have gone 9. With that I can still read most items without my glasses :) Just something to think about perhaps.

	I have looked at the charts on the 7" and felt it was usable even with my own poor eyesight, however my existing 9" Zeus2 will remain my primary plotter. I had some issues with the Zeus last season (since resolved) and felt a backup (other than Navionics on my phone) might be useful. Another limitation of the Vulcan is the chart slot which is at the rear and hence will not be readily accessible, although with the latest C-Map charts covering half of Europe swapping SD card does not need to be done so frequently. But the main reason for installing this is to be able to have a dedicated SailSteer device and have autopilot control at the port steering position. Edited by S&J - 12 May 2018 at 06:41

	Obviously there are a lot of ways to configure all our devices, but I will tell you what I did last year. I replaced the chart plotter with a 12" Zeus3 and it has been terrific. And I tend to use it for the autopilot since it is very easy to control the autopilot on the touch screen of the plotter. I replaced the Simrad black and white display that was on the starboard side with an updated Triton display so I have wind info on both sides now. And I took the old black and white display and mounted it in the cabin so while down below I have easy access to depth, wind speed, heading, etc. So while I have the dedicated autopilot control on the starboard side, I find it very easy from either side to use the Zeus3 to control it.

	I went ahead with this upgrade and can confirm it fits (non flush mount option) and looks great! As expected, speed, log and wind information is available via the N2K network however when I "goto" a waypoint on the Zeus, this is not reflected on the Vulcan. I have checked the Settings/Network/NMEA0183 options for waypoint transfer and when I save new waypoints on the Zeus they do appear on the Vulcan. I had thought that information about a currently selected waypoint would be broadcast on the N2K network and hence automatically picked up by the SailSteer page on the Vulcan.
