Has anyone come up with a clever way of stopping water getting into the cockpit from the coachroof?
On the 445 water from rain or spray drains off the flush hatch area between the mast and cockpit into channels. There are 2 channels that then run past either side of the companionway and drain just aft of the wash boards and runs onto the cockpit floor. It then very annoyingly makes an otherwise very dry cockpit (with dodger/Bimini) very wet underfoot. I’m amazed I haven’t found any comments about this on google. I also haven’t found a solution but would be very pleased to hear if anyone has.

I think we sail pretty hard and certainly get the occasional wave over the boat but you must be getting some monsters! It is only very occasionally that we get water down these channels.
[Edit: No rain in the Med and our dinghy might shield the channels from the worst if the spray.] Edited by S&J - 19 September 2023 at 17:47 |

Il est vraiment dommage d’avoir cette écoulement d’eau dans le cockpit
Il serait intéressant de trouver une solution |

We have same, stared at dribbling water many times thinking of solutions ... but learned to live with it! Be interested if there is a cure.

We have the same issues, when we are sailing it doesn’t matter. However as live aboards when it’s raining the Bimini and Bimini conversion make the cockpit water tight in the marina apart from the annoying dribbles each side of the companionway which soak the cockpit floor when it’s raining hard.
My winter project list is to design and 3D print some small guttering the forces the water into the companionway drain where it’s supposed to go. I will let you know how I get on.

Minibusdriver, it is so frustrating ...
I would be interested to read your plans on the routing and the drain etc, even before you 3D design the parts. I too have thought of a type of gutter or drain, but haven't come-up with anything worthwhile that wouldn't have been in the way or cause pooling water over time.

Hi Joel,
I have delayed responding to your post until my attempt at a solution to this issue had been in place for long enough to be shown to be effective. A friend of mine who owns a H418 had suggested simply sealing the drains where they passed under the sprayhood with silicon, thereby forcing the water to drain forward. I had reservations that this would lead to water leaking past the hatch seals. My solution, is 2 strips of 6 mm, the thinest that I could find, self adhesive foam tape. Which I attached inner faces of the companionway to prevent the water tracking aft and soaking the teak Cockpit floor. It has proved effective over the last 3 months, during which we have some of the wettest and windiest weather I can ever remember here on the West Coast of Scotland. It's cheap as chips, so can readily replaced if it starts to get grubby. Best regards Fraser H415 Raggy Doll ![]() |

So this just helps channel the water vertically into the sump below the wash board? I can see this might work for rain but not the volume of water from a large wave coming over the bow when pushing upwind in a swell.

A great solution for the 415 Fraser, thanks for sharing.
The 445 doesn't have that catchment area under the washboards - that area is flush with the rest of the cockpit unfortunately.
