Simple enough problem that had me scratching my head for perhaps longer than it should have !

Had water leak into bilge, a good 200 litres, we had motored from marina, made some tea, and not heard the water pump running continuously as we rigged sails and beat to windwards.

Luckily the leak coincided with the water tank gauge reading empty so it was easy to deduce an internal leak somewhere.  Bilge pumps worked fine.

Checked all pipe joins and water pump for leaks, none visible.  added some water to tank - leak from aft - I was suspecting calorifier or pipes to/from but they seemed fine.  Finally I thought of the deck hose.  The hose was lying on the bottom of the Starboard lazarette and was disconnected from the deck hose sprayhead, presumable brittle plastic had fractured.

All cured with a new hose/sprayhead - something I had not thought might fail before.

Just posting FYI in case it saves someone a similar issue

 Hi
Actually probably not an uncommon problem. The trick is to remove the plastic deck shower fitting (and any other plastic components + open all taps) when leaving the boat over winter. The water freezes and cracks plastic bits. (also think about cartridges in taps and filter housing on the pump)

Thank you, yes, I can imagine how this could have contributed to the problem.

After the cracking of the shower head one winter, I placed a ½ inch Ballofix between the installation and the deck hose.
Before winter I now use a compressor to empty the fresh water system. Just opening the taps will leave a lot off water in the pipes, and when freezing, the copper-pipes will expand up to a certain point and then they will crack. By using a compressor,(when the valve to the tank is closed) it is possible to drain almost all the fresh water, including the 30 liters in the water heater. In the end I press the pressure valve on the water heater to drain the last drops. I also drain the water tank to almost empty, and leave some 8-10 liters of water with a heavy dose af Aqua Clean to take care of bacterias.
