Turned the Webasto diesel heater on for the first time as autumn started in the UK. Heater started with no trouble codes but we also got a strange diesel smell and a very slight smoky mist from the outlets. Anyone else suffered this?
On Grey Goose (2005 build #31) the heater is buried in the lazarrette space port side & mounted relatively high on a small shelf. I saw no obvious fault however on detaching the flexible exhaust hose, the end in contact with the skin fitting cracked away. I’m assuming there must have have been a small leak hidden inside the exhaust pipe lagging. New combined hose & muffler ordered from Mellor. I’m now wondering how to avoid a repeat problem. On our boat, the exhaust hose leaves the heater then does a 360 degree loop and attaches to the skin fitting. There is no intermediate support of the hose. I’m wondering if that’s led to fatigue at the junction with the skin fitting. It’s a metre of flexihose and muffler plus the lagging. So relatively heavy. Anyone else’s set up the same? Or have other boats got some extra support? I’m assuming the heater was fitted by Inspiration in commissioning rather than Hanse but expect that the location is standard for the model & build year. Any clues appreciated. Thanks Mark |

I have the same issue with Eberspacher.
It happens only when cold started. There's a very tiny gap between exhaust outlet & exhaust elbow. Once heated a bit, dilatation does its job and the exhaust is gas tight. Try some exhaust paste (from automotive shops) in this gap. It helps ... but not for so long. |

Thanks Brufan. Will definitely be using exhaust paste in the rebuild. Don’t like the idea of any stray fumes creeping in to the boat.
