Has any body had the problem of the companion way cover jamming normally in the closed position. We are in a very hot climate so I am not sure if the perspex expands or something happens to the slider material but when it jams it is impossible to move for a while and then we manage to work it free and it is ok until it jams again.
Is there any lubricant which we should be using to help the situation.

Many thanks

Duncan

I had trouble with a jamming sliding hatch cover on our previous Bavaria 40.  It also used to squeal intolerably.  I found a small smear of zipper lubricant on each rail solved both problems instantly.  The zipper lubricant was in a tube from our local ship chandler and was a slightly cloudy silicone solution I think.
Good luck.

I used my carpenters plane & reduced the width a bit. So long as the blade is sharp it is quite easy to do. it does need one to remove the hatch garage to get it out first though.( A useful exercise to see how the wiring is set up)

On our yacht we found that the ptfe (?) track on which the hatch cover runs was glued as well as screwed down.  However, the glue had failed and when the plastic strip expanded under heat (in Scotland) it buckled upwards, jamming the horizontal hatch cover.  It took us 3-4 years to find that out. We lifted the plastic strip up slightly when it was cold and squirted in superglue.

In someways we had made the problem worse, because we leave the yacht with a cockpit tent up and it gets very hot in there.  We did find it helped if we left a cover over the hatch, so it was not directly heated by the sun.

When the sun warms the wood, it is deforming, so the hatch is jamming. I once had to escape through the forward skylight because the hatch was impossible to move.
Some day in the future I will find a way to grind the underside of the wood. Until then I use PTFE.

Dear All

I have shaved the edges of the cover and now there seems to be no more problem.

Many thanks to all

Same for me.   After the winter, I noticed that the vertical door was getting stuck when all the way up.  I simply slide the door up and out of the tracks, sanded the sides a little...and now it slides like butter....smooth!

You might want to make sure the rig is tuned and the backstay adjuster set to its normal (not cranked fully) position.    Its normal for the shape of a boat to change slightly with changes in the standing rigging.  Before planing doors and sliders,   or getting mad at perceived quality issues,   remember that sailboats are designed to flex..
