Good day all

I’m about to install a battery monitor on Rocinante, but can’t quite figure out why the batteries are wired as they are.   I’ve annotated  the attached photo to indicate what I BELIEVE to be the case, but can’t seem to confirm it.  Can someone tell me what the top battery, the one I’ve labeled as “Windlass/Winch?” feeds?

As always, the groups insight is greatly apprecited!

You are correct, it is a separate battery for the anchor windlass and the electric halyard winch (if installed).

Now I’m really confused!
I had originally thought that was the case, but decided to “confirm it” prior to starting my wiring for the Battery monitor.  I disconnected the battery cable (+) and went up front to test the anchor windlass... much to my dismay, it ran & so did the electric winch!

Quess I’m going to have to dig deeper!

Thanks again, at least you’ve confirmed that my original assumption was correct.  Now I just have to figure out why the windlass and winch still run!

Just traced the cable and it does in fact go to the 12v winch switch and from there to the two fuse that in turn go to the windlass and winch respectively.

On a lark, I decided to test the disconnected battery cable with my voltmeter and guess what; it shows 12+ volts; magic!

Seems it’s being back fed somewhere along the line... yes, I did poweroff the battery charger.

Currently stumped!

On my H400 it´s that I´ve got only one Housbattery but two batteries for windless, winch and bowtruster.
To avoid running out of power we installed one HD switch to chande the  batteries as need them.
Is it only a short trip or race (less than six hours) we use the one as housebattery, If it´s planned for a longer trip we use the two batteries.

Carlos,

I'm not sure if your electric layout is exactly the same as my 370 but if it is, below is a drawing made many years ago that helps explain the wiring. I have the same battery layout as you have.

If you are using the SV1 relay for battery isolation I would highly suspect a problem with that. It's intent was to connect all three batteries together when the charge voltage was greater than the battery voltage. All other times the relay would disconnect and each battery would be independent. If the relay were defective it would connect all batteries together continuously. Not a particularly bad thing but you would not have an independent house battery. I ended up replacing ALL my battery wiring because I saw a lot of problems with this design. The major problem was when I fully discharged my batteries on a long sailing race and then started the engine, the current charge to the batteries was greater than the 50 amp fuse and would pop the fuse. I ended up replacing the 60 (??) amp alternator with a 110 amp alternator, replaced all fuses with 120 amp, and put a sterling isolator in place of the SV1 relay. It has worked great for the last 6 years.

Thank you paul_heinz & lukemi.
I think you’re onto something there lukemi;  although I had the charger turned off at the 120V panel, I went further and disconnected from shore power altogether... that did the trick!

Disconnected battery cable no longer shows 12v!
I’ll,have to take a look at the SV1!

Thanks again,
Carlos

Our next plan is to replace the SV1 relay with a Sterling AB1280 Alternator to Battery Charger.
Following the installation manual this should be an easy task. The AB1280 is since some year waiting for installation in the shed.
Thanks to lukemi I´ve got a strong argument to go for the installation.
