probably too late now but after putting solar panels on the garage of two Hanses now I am of the view that it is the wrong location. You will find shading from sails and rug will significantly reduce energy harvesting. The best place in my view is on top of the Bimini or arch if you have one.

Whilst I agree that the hatch will get shade at times I am happy with my 100W panel there.  It has proved very effective.  I am reluctant to place a semi-flexible panel on canvas, however an arch (although ugly) is the ideal location.

I too agree.
That is why I added a "tent" with a panel on each side.
I have 70 watt on garage.
One 30 watt on each side of the tent.

This gives an average of about 4 amps into the batteries.

They are now connected in series to a mppt controller.

I killed an agm battery with these connected in parallell and cheap controllers.

I routed the cable forward into the ridge that supports the sprayhood track and then into the roof lining to port, then through the heads ceiling void to the area adjacent to the shower and forward to the main navigation panel and battery.
I did need to remove the "garage" cover to do this.  It made a very neat installation with virtually no cables exposed on deck.
I have no idea if this is feasible on a 400, but if you search I have previously posted pics on another thread on the forum.

I'm trying to route a cable the exact same way, but can't get from the ceiling above the shower to the main navigation panel. Do you have any tips, pictures or anything that could be of help? 😇🤞

Thanks,
Erik

Hi Erik

I have posted several times about solar installation and running cables on both my 385 and 458.  One of my posts has pics of the cable going into the port side of the companionway.
It was some time ago but I know that I always remove the ceiling spotlights and work from one to another.  The main issue you have is the two 90° bends as the ceiling meets the vertical topsides and then the horizontal deck.  I find a cheap retractable ruler (€1 from IKEA) with the tip removed is good as it is stiff to push is a straight line but will also bend round the vertical curves of the deck.  You have to "point" the ruler at the gap between the windows

Having said that, this technique did not work on the 458 as I couldn't find any gaps to get cables through.  I abandoned plans to put a 300W panel in front of the companionway and settled for two 120W panels in front of the jib track.

Good luck!

I had the same problem as Stuart describes above with the tight corners in the coachroof sides. I was able to remove the blind pelmet, drill a 10mm hole which was just enough to poke the wire on its way back down to the deck. The pelmet then covered the hole I had drilled

I did as per Sea-U’s solution. That said, there is an another route I discovered later. From under hatch garage into salon roof. Remove starboard roof lining panels & route to starboard along same path as the overhead lights. Eventually you end up at the underside of the mast foot. You can then go via the existing trunking over the forward bulkhead to the port side and down under the nav table area to the batteries etc.

The advantage of the later route is it means you are following existing cable routes but it’s more messing about!
