Hi to all,
I am looking for the right installation points for a hydrovane as a backup rudder and backup autopilot. Anybody that had already installed it, and can put some pictures of the support structure?

Pzucchel sorry, don't have it. I found a couple of useful youtube videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNOGmhAYovc&t=413s) while researching for a Hanse 470 (may cross the Atlantic in a couple of years). Hydrovane even has a channel. Also I found this site quite informative https://www.tomlogisch.com/?lang=en However, when I realized how small the rudder is compared to the main rudder, I started having second thoughts (esp. when it's on the windward side). Would the rudder of the hydrovane be sufficient for your big Hanse? Regards, George

Hi,
I did some research on this and was advised by a hydrovane dealer that it is better to install 2 hydrovanes on a 588.

I just had a quotation for a single hydrovane installation, claiming it works up to 30 tons... 🤔

It seems it is possible to have one hydrovane with various extensions, and surely off axis. Here two examples for a 505 and a 545, notice it goes above the bimini...

Too right. The result was that I decided to wait to see if anyone else tries one! I want to cross the Atlantic next year and they look useful.

Somewhere on this forum, years ago, an owner of a 40Ft Hanse said he gave up with his, because it could not cope with the sudden increase in speed as the boat accelerated down a wave. Not sure how you could search for it to read his review. However, does a 50 ft Hanse surge in a similar way?
