Dear all,

I just lost my propeller! After a sailing at 12kt boat speed, we heard a bump and, in short, the propeller has gone! I will follow up with the insurance... Cry

Now, pragmatically, I need a new one... Worth going to the 4x blades? Who has it, or can comment with respect to the 3x blades flexofold?

Thank you guys...

I'm interested in this topic too.    I have a 3 blade flex-0-fold,  which I have been happy with on my last boat and my current Hanse.   Keld and the team in Denmark were great in explaining the options.   That said,   my current prop took some cosmetic damage from leaking current in the water near me and I'm expecting that this could get worse in the coming years.

See original picture of the prop...

Pzucchel,

The standard prop for the 110hp 575 engine is the 3 blade shown in Rick's post above which is probably what you had fitted until it was lost. The standard prop for the optional 150hp 575 engine is a 4 blade. The number of blades, size and pitch are a function of the engine HP, space available to swing the prop efficiently and the hull speed of your boat. There is not reason to go for a 4 blade prop for the 110hp 575 because there is enough space to swing this diameter prop. The 150hp 575 swings a 4 blade prop to be able to use the extra horse power. Maybe Flex O Fold could tell you what 4 blade prop you could use. But I could not see any advantage of a more expensive 4 blade prop over the standard 3 blade. There was some discussion of the correct 3 blade pitch used for the 110hp 575 some time ago but I would guess you had the latest/best suited model on your 588. Our 2014 built 575 has a 24 inch (diam) x 15 inch (pitch) x 3R  (3 x blades, right hand rotation) Flex O Fold which seems fine. I think it lacks performance in reverse but this could be due to interference of the deployed stern thruster. I had heard of some 588's fitting 3 bladed Left hand props to reduce this effect - in other words a 24x15 3L. I haven't heard if this change resulted in better performance in reverse. Maybe Flex O Fold could advise you about this option. It may make more sense to go for a Left hand rotation prop to replace your lost prop. You obviously need tp change the gear box rotation to use the Left hand prop but that is no problem with the ZF gear box.

Sounds reasonable Wayne.   FWIW-the dimensions on our prop (late 2017 575 with a 110hp engine) are 23x16x3R   See stamp on prop...

Rick,

Your prop size sounds like the "revised" sizing from our 575 which is probably what Pzucchel had before it went missing. I saw a 588 in Sicily which was having its' prop changed to a Left Hand rotation to, hopefully, improve the reversing characteristics. The owners had a lot of maneuvering mishaps so the suggestion was to change rotation but I think the same prop size/pitch was used. Not sure if it improved anything.

Very good comments, thanks Wayne. I don't want necessarily go to the 4x blades, just understand what are the benefits. I have missed verifying the direction of rotation, and all you explained makes sense. I have a 2018 model with the 110hp d3 engine, I will record the sense of rotation next time I go to the boat. The difference in price on boatoon is significant, about 2000 euros, so I will stick to the standard configuration if there is no dramatic benefit.

I was told there was a change in prop but, having a distrust of manufacturing processes that try to use parts in inventory, I called Flex-o-Fold in Denmark and they confirmed this prop for my 110hp engine

So far so good, outside of my current in the water problem
