Hi Hanse owners,
I live in the US and I'm interested in buying a Hanse boat (new), however, I noticed that there is a discrepancy between Europe and US pricelists. Hanse publishes the list price on its website: Here is the pricelist for 418 in Europe: Hanse 418 US Hanse dealers also publish the list price: Here is the pricelist for 418 in the U.S.: Hanse 418 If we convert the price from EU pricelist to US pricelist, all the items have been converted with today's exchange rate (1.27 which is still higher but close to the market rate) except the boat itself (STANDARD SPECIFICATION) which is converted with the rate of 1.48. This is almost $35K difference. From what I understand, none of the other expenses such as tax, duty, commissioning, shipping and delivery is baked into it, so why there is such a huge difference for the boat but not the rest of the items? Thanks

I found the same buying in the UK. My boat is based in EU and I had started to look at boats through a Portuguese dealer. I brought this up with the UK dealer and we did the deal in Euros. This was in 2015 pre Brexit so I got a fantastic deal.
Buying my second Hanse, on order now, I am doing the same. Not such a great deal as the £ has devalued over 25% since 2015, but I still think I'm doing better with the Euro exchange rate I have achieved. I suggest talking to your dealer. They may be prepared to negotiate on a Euro price. As you suggest much of the commissioning and things added locally (canvas?) will be priced in $ regardless.

Ah! yes! Here is Europe we have always suffered from the USD to Euro/UKP exchange rate but unlike your situation it has always gone against us. I have in the past worked for a number of USA companies and their exchange rate has been direct USD to UKP - when I asked why? I got the answer " Because we can"- the Europeans expect to pay more for their products." I'm sorry that it is workig against you this time but we have lived with this for a long time. Here is another example - Levis in USA ~$50 here in the UK > £100

Thanks S&J and grumpydatagit for your comments. I actually checked Levis and you are right. The same jean priced $50 in the USA is priced 100 euro in Europe .
I did a little more research on other brands (Beneteau and Dufour) and interestingly Dufour price is not inflated in the US like Hanse and Beneteau, so Dufour is more expensive than Hanse and Beneteau in Europe, however, it is cheaper or at the same level in the US. I also found an article in Beneteau's website warning buyers about "Pitfalls of buying your new boat in Europe". Among all of their "reasons", these two stood out: 1- Beneteau America does not recognize European warranties for a Beneteau in North America 2- Volvo of the Americas will only approve a PDI inspection conducted by a Volvo certified dealer in North America. Now back to Hanse, - Do you know anyone who has imported a new Hanse boat from EU to US? Is it possible and worth it? - Does Hanse America accept the warranty if the boat is imported from Europe. By buying from Europe and paying in Euro, I might be able to save up to $60K for a new Hanse boat (418 and above), however, as a first time buyer and a newbie, I'm not sure if this is a good move.

I guess the starting point is to find a dealer in Europe. Inspiration Marine in UK have a good reputation although they are no longer in the EU which may complicate things.
I know they have sold boats to Australians despite Windcraft also having a good reputation down under. I guess most boats they sell are a least sailed in Europe to begin with as they are responsible for commissioning as well as subsequent warranty. Hanse now use Yanmar engines but they may have similar PDI restrictions.

Cheers,
Since we bought our Hanse (actually from Sweden, but also in EUR from them even though their "base currency" was SEK), I've had some contact with one US Hanse dealer, and she said you can obviously choose to buy the yacht from them in EUR if you want (despite them being a US dealer). One further thought: it's really important to have a good dealer, because after the pre-commissioned boat exits the Hanse factory, they basically control everything to make the whole experience either a good or a not-so-good one. If buying the boat to be used in Europe, it would make sense to buy it from a dealer over here, otherwise I'd absolutely buy it from a US dealer that has a good handle on all issues relating to that. I'll send my contact's email to you by private message. I'm sure she'd be happy to give her point of view :)

Another vote for Inspiration Marine and also to echo what mglonnro said, that getting a decent dealer is invaluable and in terms of "value" rather than "Price" how do you offset one against the other. I bought in the UK from IMG, but did notice that there was a stock boat available at the time in Holland for slightly less (even factoring the fx). But glad I bought from a decent dealer, was worth more than the slight saving

I have heard nothing but praise for Inspiration Marine and indeed I bought two second hand boats through them and their service was great but I do fear that the Brexit situation may put them at a price disadvantage for overseas buyers.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and guidance. I totally agree that it is very important to have a good dealer to make the whole experience easy and enjoyable. That's one of the main reasons that has made me a little hesitant to seek a dealer in Europe.
What I have seen so far among the US Hanse dealers is that they are in sync with each other. As soon as you contact one dealer who is not located in your region, they refer you to a dealer closer to your location. That's to mglonnro's point which they also believe a dealer closer to me can help and assist me better with the pre-sale and post-sale processes and I agree with them. It's just that extra $60k makes me to doubt this part . |

As a fellow US based owner I can offer a silver lining. Resale values are higher here compared to Europe or maybe that’s just boats in general. That’s all I got
