Hi, the "push to speak" button on our handheld VHF broke recently. The first time this happened the unit was still under warranty so I didn't think much about it. This time the warranty had expired, I took it into our local B&G agent and they said they could send it back to New Zealand for repair at my cost or sell me a new one for US$250!
I decided that I would take it apart and see what the damage was, as you can see from the attached photo these switches are tiny and are not held in place with anything other than solder. The big rubber buttons on the case give a sense of robustness that is non existent.
I tried soldering it back myself but this was beyond my skills and eyesight, so a friend looked at it for me and said I needed a new push switch and told me what to order. I had to buy a pack of 10 for the total price of US$1.70 so throw away a perfectly good piece of equipment for the sake of a 17 cent switch!
The unit is now working again and I am looking at ways of reinforcing the switch so that it doesn't happen again.
All the best
Paul

Hi Mark
This is the description I got from my friend:-
10pcs Tact Switch Horizontal SMD 3x6x3.5mm 250gf reflow solderable Rohs tactile push button SMT with 2 locators|button remote|switch small button
I put the whole description into Google and it came up on Ali Express in China USD$ 1.70 for 10 and I lashed out on airfreight delivery for another USD$2.00 and they arrived after about 10 days. But I am sure you can buy them elsewhere
Good luck

Mine failed last year but I was able to get B&G to repair it for a rather reasonable £30 including postage back to me.
I am aware of the weakness in the design and tried to treat the PTT button gently after that!

This is a common problem with Surface Mount electronics - did the pad under the switch lift as well?

You can beef this up little dob of epoxy glue behind the switch to provide support.
