I like the Forward scan form B&G, looks promising but where to install the transducer on a H385. Does anybody already installed it ?
If I put it in place where the existing speed / depth is, I loose the speed-sensor. Left or right i think i need another passage through the hull but where is the best position and I think the FW scan must be in perfect vertical position for best performance ?

So if you have experience on this topic and you like to share, this is really welcome Smile
Thanks,
/C

Be aware that it need a certain distance from other depth sounders. I found that out when reading the user manual after buying it, and had to find another spot than first planned on my 430.

I don't have it,  so maybe someone can explain the value to me.      My impression is that a large boat, moving at (say) 4-8 kts is going to cover about 30' in 2-3 seconds.    Not much time to react given its supposedly is giving you depth not that far in front of your boat.   So in a a sailing situation,  I really don't know whether its going to tell you anything quick enough for you to react.

I can see it in an anchoring situation.  If you want to CRAWL up to a spot, and be sure of the depth when you get there,  maybe.

How do people actually use this in practice?

I installed it on our hanse 375, on the port side about 50 cm from the middle and of course in front of the keel. on the other side about the same hight is the depth sounder. We use it when entering narrow and shallow channels or rivers. it works very well.

Hi Carlos - I had a B&G Forward Scan fitted by the dealer in 2016 when the boat was new. It really came into its own as my first cruise was to the Baltic that year. it was invaluable in navigating shifting sandbanks off the Dutch and German coasts. And in in manouvering in marinas where our draft was a little "tight". I agree that its unlikely to prevent a collision at speed but for ditch crawling its a great piece of kit. As to its location it is forward of the regular echo sounder and on the opposite side. At a guess they are over half a metre apart.

The Forward Scan also brings with it a "fish finder" feature. Not that I catch (or even attempt to catch) fish but it is interesting to observe where they can be found.

regards

Richard

Dear all,

thanks for the feedback on the forward scan, it stays on my list and the the very  first reason why i am interested in is for the navigation in narrow waters and unknown harbors. Of course you have your chars but in some harbors there are surprises to. ( We have seen already several issues @ Belgium coast )
The second issue is, i have seen already several Hanses who survived a grounding and there is most of the time some serious damage ( sub-frame gets ripped off the hull ) so ours H is still in perfect shape and i like to keep it that way :)
Thanks,
Best regards
