Useful discussion.  Interesting how actual experiences can lead to different conclusions from the same basic theory; I don't have the issues with the lines that Samuel has yet I can certainly understand the desire not to be hanged by your own boat, and I can appreciate why Martin rigs his lines the way he does.  Perhaps that's part of the fascination of our sport: there's often no single 'right' way to do something only the way that works for you on your particular boat depending on the particular circumstances.   However, its often fun to experiment on the basis of other's experiences and I might well try a few tweaks this season.
