    Posted: 09 January 2021 at 15:01
So I installed a new B&G NAC-3 Autopilot Controller and I was going through the setup and the computer needed the rudder angle at port and starboard lock position.  Sure this is not too hard to assess when the boat is out of the water, but mine is in and I cannot see the rudder very well due to lots of debris in the water around me.

Just to get started I put in 45 deg.  but I am hoping that someone out there knows what angle the rudder is at when at full lock to one side.

If you know then please reply.  otherwise I'll leave it at 45 until I get clearer and warmer water.

It’s probably in the 30 to 35 degree range.

good morning to you

On my 415, removal of the covering case over the rudder reveals the self steering components and the angle could be determined accurately by observation of the movement of the helm from side to side - perhaps it is the same on your 400?

Great Idea there Yeoey.  I'll pull off the cover for the emergency tiller and take a look.

Edited:  For the record, 2007 Hanse 430e.  35 degrees off center at full lock.  Eyeballed with my nav protractor.

on my 2010 twin helm 400 its 35 deg, plotter/AP computer should tell you to turn the wheel lock to lock during the set up and will tell you what the angle is.

It needs to correlate to the rudder angle sensor.  So put it hard over and see what the sensor says.  You can see the raw data in the network diagnostics part of the menus.

You sure it doesn’t auto detect max rudder angles? Even my old AP25/AC10 setup does that as part of the ‘dockside’ setting process.  Or have you maybe got a rudder angle sensor misbehaving and the NAC-3 thinks it’s operating without one?

During the setup for the NAC-3, the computer wants to know the rudder angle at full turn(lock) and you need to enter that angle to complete the setup process.  It also asks you to center the helm, and to turn the wheel to each stopping point.  This is all for the dockside setup and is likely for the calibration.  I have not yet performed the sea trail setup and cannot until Greece lifts the lockdown restrictions.

That's curious, the NAC-3 Commissioning Manual suggests the Dockside rudder centre/rudder limits process is an automated action.  Even warns you to keep clear while the wheel is spun.  Setting rudder limits manually is part of the User settings area for tuning to suit conditions.  Time to talk to Navico/Simrad/B&G?
