Hi Gordon. I broke the flapper on my last boat (don’t ask me how!)
I was able to swap the flapper over for a new one very easily. Annoyingly though Airmar would only sell me the whole through hull assembly rather than just the flapper :( I think it’s a common issue so maybe they do now sell just the single part required Matt

Matt,
Thanks, and it breaks couple of weeks after an antifoul, rather than a couple of weeks before!

I fitted the acoustic speed and temperature Airmar to replace the paddlewheel version on my 505. It worked very well and no longer need to remove and clean the paddle every few weeks. The new gauge fits in the same through-hull fitting so that is as easy to replace as the paddlewheel version is to clean. It has a long cable to a box and then an NMEA 2000 drop cable. I just had to add an NMEA 2000 to Simnet cable to complete the job. The box went into the forward bench in the main cabin. Very easy. The B&G just need to be told in config to take speed and temperature from the new unit. It did cost about 1,000 euro to buy. The NASA one may be cheaper but you may have to pay more to haul the boat and replace the throughhull. And I'm not sure if it would work with the B&G? May do?

There was a ultrasonic solution marketed by Signet Scientific in California in the 1980's. AFAIK it necver took of due to price and reliability issues.
But electronics nowadays are different to 1985. |

I'd love to know how you managed to replace the "flap" in the transducer housing. The became disconnected on my boat after a few years. I managed to retain the flap, but could not see how to replace it in the tube when the boat was ashore. There appears to be a small spindle that it hinges on but could not see how to get this in place again. There also seems to be a circlip/washer around the lip of the tube - does this need to be removed to effect this repair?

Must admit it was a while ago - when you mentioned the circlip it started coming back to me, but below is a link to the instructions anyway. I remember it being easy at least and I did it in between tides. You basically pry the clip apart and push the valve unit out
