Hi All, today I was turning over the upholstery for winter and noticed the after port cabin bed was warm on investigation I found the water heater under the bed was warm and the water hot? ARLOKO is on shore power semi laid up for winter. All the control panel is off. My question is, is this normal that the water heater is constantly on whilst on shorepower?Does anyone unplug the heater on leaving the boat ?

The main switch / control panel is for 12V DC only. The water heater is 240V DC. Personally I only ever switch the water heater on for a short time if I need it. I don't leave it on 24/7. There is also a plug/socket under the port aft berth and I would unplug this for the winter. I doubt that you will get frost where you are located, but if this is likely all water systems should be completely drained for the winter. I previously had to replace a water heater because I failed to do this in La Rochelle where it definitely freezes in the winter. Edited by S&J - 24 January 2021 at 14:27 |

Thanks S&J
I will have to check this next time I'm passing the boat, however I have never noticed a red light under the chart table only the green shore power light. If so the heater has been on ever since I bought the boat in September and maybe forever before that. This must be Hanse logic, a switch not on the control panel. Your right we dont get really deep long duration freezing conditions here but I will take your advice and drain the system if any are forecast. Cheers |

In our 370 there is a 240v wall socket right next to the hot water tank. This plug has only power if the red light under the table is on. I almost never have this plugged in. The earth/grounding wire from shore-power will through the casing and the waterhoses to the engine heat exchanger - create a eletrical connection to the engine/saildrive and perhaps increase corosion of the engine and saildrive/prop. So we either use the heat from the engine or only use it just prior if a shower is needed( if there are no showers in the marine/port) /h8jer

To be fair to Hanse, the reason that the heater is not switched from the main switch board is that the heater is a 240V AC circuit. All the switches on the main switchboard are for 12V DC circuits. For this reason the heater switch is more logically located adjacent to the shorepower light and 240 socket under the chart table.
I also think it is good practice to only switch this on when required.

To break the possible source for corosion it will be required to fully unplug the plug from the wall socket - only using the switch below the table will not be enough. At the end of season, all the water is pumped out and the rest is sucked out with wet-vacuum cleaner. Else the hot watertank might be damaged by frost /h8jer

You would need to look at the plans to see whether this would work on other calorifier positions.

Hi, really greatfull for all the advice and comments on here and great I found the switch but there is no red light on it. S&J's logic for not having the switch on the panel makes some sense but I still think it could be in a better position.
