We are having a hull polish at the moment, fancy nano stuff. The people doing it have said..
"I inspected the
surface myself and believe the gel coat is very thin in some parts and almost
transparent. We have also tried in a small area wet sanding to see if it
would improve the finish by removing more material however this has made no
difference and normally a last resort as overall it will weaken the gel coat
further. We will endeavour to give you the best finish
and protect it as per the premium polish, however at some point it will require
either spray painting or a vinyl wrap". This was a surprise. I wonder if anyone else has had reports of a thin gelcoat? Thanks.

I looked at the nano polish stuff in 2019 when I bought my 2008 430e. I do not recall the brand. The seller/installer said similar things about my current gel coat finish. That it was thin in places and had spots of embedded dirt. He said that the polish would help but would not guarantee anything.
My take away was that it would be good to use that product on a brand new boat and that it was not worth it on mine. I had the boat polished and left it at that.

I sold my last boat (not a Hanse) when she was 13 years old. As part of my winter maintenance I would always polish and wax the gelcoat (one year I used a nano product apparently used on aircraft - it didn’t really seem any better in my opinion). Worryingly I had to replace one of the vinyl decals due to UV damage and found a distinct ridge in the underlying gelcoat after I removed it, with the gelcoat covered by the vinyl being noticeably raised compared with the surrounding gel. I’ve therefore been much softer with my new Hanse, only using 3M’s “finesse it” once after the second season.
Ive been pretty impressed with the thickness of the Hanse gelcoat in the bits I can access and see

it’s maybe a coincidence but bought boats, 470 e and 430 e, are epoxy and maybe that’s the reason the gelcoat is thinner??

Well, my problem is the opposite. My gel coat is too thick and is
cracking. Looks like they added gel coat when it came out of the mold
rather than scrapping a hull. Great quality control. What was Germanischer Lloyd quality control all about?
