Hi. Has anyone fitted rutgerson batten cars to their Hanse 350? If so what model number car and is it a straight swop? Thanks.

Well yes and no!
When we bought a new Quantum main it came complete with Rutgerson cars, the problem was that they were too shallow to fit the profile of the mast and they jammed on the way up and down. The supplier had to replace them with, I think, Seldėn OWS type. Bob

When I ordered a new main for my 341, I had given him my old main as a guide and he quoted me Rutgerson batten cars and I mistakenly assumed they would be roller cars, as on the original main. In fact they were only sliders and after around a year of struggling to to hoist, I switched them to roller cars.
I remembered the following thread I ordered 4 of the 1536-11-05 batten cars from Contender UK and it was just a straight switch to unscrew the slider cars and replace them with the roller cars. Remember not to screw the cars all the way in, as the batten has to rotate when you drop the sail. At the head of the sail, I used one of the sliders and a large shackle. In the thread, it states that the masts on the 342 and 350 were the same section.

Thanks for this.Should I use 1536-11-05 or 1536-11-15? Do I have to change the batten holder also? Thanks

The situation is a bit complicated, it took me some time to work it out.
The various options can be seen in the Rutgerson brochure My replacement main was fitted with batten end fittings something like this These are used with a roller batten car that has a threaded connection like So I was able to replace my simpler sliders with 1536 11 05 roller sliders So this is a different situation to your sail In the final post on the thread listed above Gran Onada mentions that he will probably use 1536-11-15 These are batten cars with a fork These would normally be used with the Rutgerson batten end fittings I think you will have to look in the technical data to see if the sizes of the Rutgerson batten end fittings are equivalent to the type of batten end fitting that you have. I get the impression that Rutgerson would claim that simple end fittings like that should only be used on small boats (less than 33ft). You would also have to consider whether the battens can twist as the sail is lowered and whether this will affect how the sail covers will fit. I hope this all makes sense. |

That’s great information. Thanks for your help here. How long have you had this solution and is it still performing well?

Hi, we have a 325 and fitted Rutgerson a few years ago. http://www.contender.co.uk We have replaced the single slide on the headboard with two RU-1526-11 (Big Wheels), the batten cars have been replaced with four RU-1531-11-05 (10mm stud with Big Wheels) the batten receptacles on the sail have been replaced with RU-1580 (Batten size is 30mm) all of the intermediate slides are unchanged. Fitting was straight forward and we completed the work with the sail still on the boat. Very happy with the performance. Regards Paul

Thanks for this. I hadn’t thought about the headboard. Was only going to do the battens.
